I can't even keep up with my own thoughts so blogs are usually a no go for me. This thread works just fine for me with your going-ons.

SO! What a puddle of mud I've stepped in.

The museum I work with is gearing up for the annual Halloween party. We broke even last year, and the board is making the exact same mistakes they did last year, so I had to open my pie hole.

We have a costume contest, where the awards for placing 1-3 are around thirty thousand dollars "worth" in prizes. The winners are by applause, and I mentioned it was complete nepotism as the judges don't judge anything...family and friends do. And for the past three years we've had the same person as the number one winner, the chair of the museum's board's best friend. And last year, my wife wore thee exact same costume, wayyyyy better, and wasn't selected for the contest.

So I called bullshit to everyone on the board. Let's have scorecards, not applause, as who has the most friends wins, so it is not a costume contest, it is a popularity contest.

Got the word back stating "It is disappointing and confusing that you comment on a contest you haven't seen".

I replies swiftly and told them that I am naive about the contest, but I am passing on word from lots of our attendees that they think the contest is a crock. "Why have contest when we already know the winner?" and so forth is sputtered every year.

The committee is up in arms with "You have no idea!", and I'm all "Yeah, I already said that. I don't have an idea about how the contest works, what I do have an idea about is how to improve it and not piss off our members". And I have to be blunt with these people, because they're ollllllllllllllllllld. No change = perfect. We need change.

And one of the best pieces of advice my Father gave me was "Luke, think. Think think think. The most important thing in your life is to think. The most difficult thing in your life will be to change how people think. Thinking takes effort, having an open mind, patience, and persistence."

It's a beautiful ballet of words and confidence to get someone to even listen to you sometimes. And believe it or not, I am the calm one. These board members seem to tak new ideas as trumping theirs and oh are the the defensive bunch. They take suggestions as orders...but that's sometimes how life works. And sometimes you work with people who confuse the word Twitter for a slang term used to say Vagina, because we really need to "Twat out invites".

Maybe they're the ones who are onto something. If you twatted out invites i'm sure you'd have a higher bottom line.

This reminds me of the following line that would be ok in a Disney movie:

"We're going to snatch that pussy, put him in a box, and bring him on the airplane!"

If you said that in jest or not, I agree.

Attendance = $

My line of thinking is not of keeping attendance at a sustainable level, but growing it and not lowering it because a member of the museum wants things done her way.

No issues of someone not accepting one of my ideas. Different matter when I can't even show my idea. That drives everyone nuts, doesn't it? Huge difference between waking a pitch and being denied and being told "No" after uttering only a few words.

Usually I'm pretty swell at getting people to listen, but with these guys and gals the door slams before it even opens.

^That sating makes no sense, but you get what I'm conveying.

Smile: I do have two dogs in the fight that will speak to the board today. I can't make it, which sucks as it is my argument, but they will mention "We think Luke has a point when...", so I will have people to speak for me.

Weird But True: This morning I went to my local Target, which has a B&N store next to it with a Starbuck's and outside patio. Speedboats (I typed speedbumps, but that auto correct is awesome) everywhere so you drive at around five mph in this strip mall.

Building a bridge.

A guy sitting outside of the Starbucks had two drinks (coffee I assume), two open books, and two cigarettes between the index and middle fingers of his right hand. There was no other chair near his table either.

What is even weirder is that I wished I carried around different trophies so I could award him one and tell him "Congratulations as being the weirdest person I've seen today".

I love inside jokes. Hope to be a part of one someday.

Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.
