That was definitely my reaction to the latter half of that series.
What bothers me the most is that Near's deduction of past events boils down to, "It just HAS to be!" Uh... why?

I will tell you the last few episodes are really good, or at least I found them to be.
Agreed and I thought the ending was great.
I hated Near and Mello, but I didn't love L or anything either (he was way better though haha). I was a Kira fan so that may have helped make it tolerable still in the later half, just to see how far Kira had fallen into his own obsessive despair and madness.
Finished off Ghost Hound. It was alright. It has its moments, but I certainly got the feeling that it took a lot of its best ideas and then only got half-way done with fleshing each one of them out. It got a few chuckles out of me, but it's definitely not the best IG has to offer.
Also, Amazon had this listed in the 'Horror' genre, which is pretty off the mark. There's a lot of supernatural elements, yeah, but would I call any of them horror? Nay.
One horror series I can suggest is Boogiepop Phantom. It's also got some supernatural elements, but I recall it being pretty awesome. It's been awhile though... I remember watching some low res files for it too years ago haha, which added to the effect and atmosphere a bit, as if I were watching some locked away VHS tapes or something.
Texhnolyze is probably the most messed up anime I've ever seen though. I enjoyed it, but... not for everyone at all and the ending is beyond fucked.
I hear Gantz is divisive because it deviates from the manga and doesn't cover much. No idea though. I'm not much of a reader so I'll probably never know personally. lol
