Games Beaten 2016
Re: Games Beaten 2016
As someone who is only going to play the Battlefield 1 campaign, how much of a discount should I hold out for?

I would say wait until it's $30. What's there is extremely good, but if you're not going to play the multiplayer, I wouldn't pay more than $30 for it.

Re: Games Beaten 2016
This is getting posted the day after because I was too tired last night to write a review of Gunjack after finished my post about Battlefield 1.
Games Beaten in 2016 So Far - 107
January (20 Games Beaten)
February (8 Games Beaten)
March (8 Games Beaten)
April (13 Games Beaten)
May (6 Games Beaten)
June (13 Games Beaten)
July (7 Games Beaten)
August (15 Games Beaten)
September (8 Games Beaten)
October (9 Games Beaten)
107. EVE: Gunjack - PlayStation 4 - October 20

EVE: Gunjack started off as an Oculus Rift game IIRC, but having yet to adopt PC VR, my first experience with it is via Playstation VR. Gunjack is definitely a budget VR game, but that shouldn't dissuade Playstation VR owners from giving it a go. It's definitely worth it.

Gunjack is a digital-only title that offers what in a lot of ways is a much simplified, arcade-style version of Valkyrie. You play as a guy manning a stationary gun defending a legally dubious mining operation from pirates. As a stationary gunner, you don't get to move, and you look around and aim my moving your head. It's a bitch if you're having neck pains (like I was towards the end last night), but generally speaking, it's EXTREMELY smooth and much more precise than I had expected. It's also extremely affordable; it's normal price is $10, but if you're a Playstation Plus subscriber, you can download it for $8.

As is par for the course for these early Playstation VR titles, it's not a graphical wonder (please note that some of the images here are a mix of Oculus Rift and Playstation VR), but it does look quite good - better than some VR games I've played on the platform - and the action is so often so fast paced, that you'll very quickly stop paying any attention to the headset's somewhat limited graphical prowess. One thing that is worth mentioning is how effectively the 3D audio is used. Make sure you've got some good headphone for this one; the ambient audio and sound effects add a very subtle but very immersive touch to the experience.

This is what I think we'll start to see frequently on VR platforms - short, fun arcade experiences. I think we're a few years off yet from full-length experiences' being commonplace, but Gunjack is a perfect example of how VR can revive the "arcade" style game with a modern twist. If you own a Vive, Oculus, or PS VR, I absolutely recommend picking up Gunjack. It only provide two or three hours of play for your first playthrough, but for the price and how much fun those few hours are, it's well worth the cost of admission.

Does this mean you'll only play 50 cents for an NES platformer?

Replay value is a huge factor here and we're talking a BF campaign... that's probably something I'd play once and never touch again. 8bit/16bit stuff is totally different. Way more value for your buck there. And if that sounds biased, it is.

Clearly you've never been in a biplane dogfight with Germans.

Really I'm just bitter we probably won't get a Bad Company 3. Those campaigns were hilarious. All about that gold! And BC2 was the last FPS I was knee deep into with online mulitplayer.
Anyways, I am pretty curious about BF1 actually. I still standby my cheapass opinion on the pricing for 4 hours worth of campaign time there, but the multiplayer is probably cool. I'm not hearing good impressions about Infinite Warfare and didn't like the Titanfall 2 beta, so if I do get one of these big shooters this season it'll probably be BF1.

I'm with you on Bad Company 3. I wouldn't say never, though; if you'd asked me a year ago, I'd have laughed at the notion of a big-budget game from a major franchise going back to World War I. I'm not super excited about Infinite Warfare, but given the upswing in writing quality in the past two Call of Duty games, I'm giving it a shot. I didn't play the Titanfall 2 beta, but I'm willing to give any series that involves giant robots a chance, and since the first one was a multiplayer only piece of shit, I don't count that as having used up its chance.

VR Fantasy (Android) 7/10
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... tasy&hl=en

VR Fantasy is a free virtual reality dungeon crawler. You explore a dungeon, find some loot, kill some monsters, solve simple puzzles, and ultimately defeat a boss. It's not a very challenging game, and is also brief. However it does accomplish the feeling of being in a dungeon, and with charming atmosphere as well. I had a good time with this one, and would recommend it to dungeon crawling fans who also enjoy VR. If you don't like spiders, especially giant spiders chasing you through a maze, you might want to pass.
