You can circle strafe the Cyber Demon! If you're at the end of The Shores of Hell (Episode 2) then just be sure to take out all of the Lost Souls first. You don't want them attacking you while you're trying to concentrate on the Cyber Demon, and you especially don't want one of them to fly at you as you fire a rocket and take rocket damage. Then you shouldn't have much trouble circle strafing the Cyber Demon. The pillars also help to block his rockets, just be sure not to blast a rocket into a pillar while circle strafing and damage yourself! For your first go, it might be easier to to lure him to a more open so you don't have to worry about where the pillars are.

You can also straddle his rocket shots, which are really fast, but if you do it at a distance it's not too hard. Circle strafing is definitely easier.

Not using run makes the game a lot harder. Funny story... When I was younger I never knew there was a run button. I could never get past level 2 in DOOM 2 because it requires run lol.

Yea I found that video when I was researching how to beat this boss, using the modern control scheme you can do it easy but I am using the original control scheme(for authenticity) and I can't do the circle all I can do is "slide" right or left.

I didn't imagine Doom had a run button, all this time I took a hit from those poison rivers, the game was moving too fast already and I thought the run button was added in later games when they decided to take things slower kind of like Call of Duty.

DOOM always allowed you to rebind the keys, so there's no reason not to use WASD. If you really want to be authentic, then you can't use the mouse either because the first release of DOOM didn't have mouse support!

You can use the mouse?
I went fully authentic with keyboard only  I didn't know Doom had official mouse support I thought it was added later on by the fan community.

Yes, DOOM absolutely supported the mouse in DOS. If you're playing the vanilla version in DOS Box, there is a separate settings launcher and you can find the mouse settings in there.

I think you're handicapping yourself for no good reason. If you wanted to experience the original key bindings with no mouse, that's cool, but there's no reason to play through the entire game like that. That's like playing Street Fighter II on a 3-button Genesis controller just because. Sega created the 6-button Genesis controller because of Street Fighter II, and people went out and bought the 6-button controller because of Street Fighter II. When DOOM was first released, if you owned a DOS computer with no mouse, DOOM might have been a reason you finally went out and bought a mouse. DOOM was so insanely popular when it was released, I'm sure lot's of people upgraded their entire computers to run the game better.

I really didn't know Doom was supported with mouse controls by id, all the old FPS like Duke Nukem and Heretic used arrows. I thought it was a later advancement in FPS gaming, kind of like how PSX had D-Pad then they added analogue, even the Dreamcast had just 1 analogue. Mouse+WASD is pretty advanced for that time, its still the main and best control form. Any idea which game came up first with the mouse+WASD control scheme?

I don't think it was something that any one game just appeared with. As noted here, games had used WASD or ESDF many years earlier for directional controls. However, in line with your thoughts, the default controls for FPS games when they started to emerge were the arrow keys and the like, even if using a mouse was common enough (the demo stuff for DOOM even looks to be recorded with mouse input).
Where you probably started to see more importance placed on mouse control was when game engines shifted to true 3D, notably, with Quake. Now, you had movement and aiming (potentially) become two different things. "Mouselook" was an option to turn on. Between the wiki info there, and what I remember from the time, that's kind of where you started to see KB/mouse become a common way for players to set their game up, even if it wasn't yet the default. I remember setting +mlook in the autoexec file for Quake for instance. Quake II still didn't default to WASD in '97, but a year later, Half-Life did.

Still, I wouldn't really point at a particular game for it. It was more a commonly configured scheme that was adopted by developers.

Very interesting, but for it to be configured doesn't it mean it had to be put in there first by the developers of the game as an option? I mean the mouse.
I find it funny that id didn't make "mlook" the default, like they are saying there is this other weird control scheme but we think most would prefer the arrow keys

Mouse support? Sure. It was there, but it was there in DOOM (and Wolfenstein 3D for that matter) too, albeit not used in quite the same way. They had joystick support too. Generally, most FPS type games prior didn't have much of a need to look up or down (there were earlier examples though, like Marathon). Leaving the default behavior as what people were used to made some sense.

Romero upped the ante with Inferno, but with the Flesh Consumed it seems near impossible

I've beaten Thy Flesh Consumed a few times on UV, but it is my least favorite episode of DOOM (including SIGIL) because of the difficulty.

If you want any help with level tactics, I recommend watching Big Mac Davis. He has a playlist walkthrough for every classic DOOM. Here's Ultimate DOOM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn700Jq ... n3nF26hCe0
