Yeah, a handful of titles are already there.

I haven't been around much, but truth be told I've been keeping up with these and enjoying them.

And to keep up the conversation on it, yes, Hook is excellent. In fact there are a number of decent to really good licensed games that you might have missed if you were keeping to an anti-license policy, such as Batman Returns, Goof Troop, the Addams Family games, or RoboCop vs. Terminator.

Batman Returns is awesome. I've known about that one since I was a kid, but at the time I didn't know that licensed games usually meant a bad game, so being a Batman fan + Konami = getting lucky...

I rented Goof Troop back in the day as well (again, solely based on it having to do with something I liked) and never got far. I think it was too sophisticated for my younger self.

I figure RoboCop vs. Terminator would be preferrable on the Genesis. Isn't it an incredibly violent (for the time) game? What exactly makes the Addams Family games stick out?

I'd also like to add Tiny Toons Adventures: Buster Busts Loose! as another solid licensed game (Konami strikes again) and no discussion of licensed games is complete without U.N. Squadron, the stealth licensed game.

Goof Troop is fantastic as a co-op game.

Robocop vs. Terminator is different enough on the SNES to consider trying out but the Genesis game is uncensored and overall more fun and in some regards even better looking, especially the character sprites. It's not a bad game on the SNES like some people make it out to be it's just not as relevant. Kind of like the whole Sunset Riders thing I was talking about earlier only in reverse.

The SNES Robocop vs Terminator was notable for its badass box

Nice look at Super Metroid. I too have trouble with the wall jumping.

And back to licensed games...there are more good ones than you think, some of which SNESdrunk has already looked at(Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition, True Lies, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, Shadowrun). There are also some legendarily terrible ones that drag the whole concept down though, like Cliffhanger, Bebe's Kids, Home Alone 2, and Ultraman.

Sometimes the licensed game succeeds. Sometimes it fails utterly. And sometimes it is mediocre but with a few moments of brilliance. It's a very hit-or-miss subtype of games, but I'd be happy to recommend a few that, while not exactly top tier, aren't total shovelware.

You know a game is probably good when there's a genre partially named after it because we don't know what else to call games that emulate it.

Super Metroid is the one game on the SNES that I can say without a doubt that Nintendo's competitors had nothing to rival it. Until Castlevania SotN there was no game where you could fully, honestly say, "this is the Super Metroid of *insert console here.*"

There are few games that have sucked me in so completely with their atmosphere and sense of discovery. It's one of those experiences I wish I could erase from my mind simply so I could experience it again for the first time.

This game lands as my number 1 for the console. It's hard to believe that 90's Nintendo put out such a dark and broody game.

You just gave me an idea for a video, Licensed Games You Shouldn't Be Afraid Of (maybe I shouldn't end it in a preposition...) Maybe it's a generational thing, or just people like AVGN promoting the idea, but licensed games were almost always horrendous in the NES era and early into the 16-bit era. The games had no incentive to be good. But, so far there's...

Hook
Goof Troop
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose
Biker Mice From Mars
True Lies
Power Rangers Fighting Edition
Robocop vs Terminator (although I agree with Knuck, it's better on Genesis)
Batman Returns
Adventures of Batman and Robin
Jurassic Park Part 2: The Chaos Continues

What else is there?

Yup, nailed it. It's a close #3 for me behind Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World.

Someone on reddit had a great comment about Super Metroid, something I totally missed: it can be as difficult as you want to make it. You can either meticulously pick up every item and upgrade and explore every area, or you can speedrun to finish as fast as you can, or you can kinda go halfway between the two, etc.
