You might also consider the Sonic games (1, 2, Chaos), Psychic World, Psycho Fox, Ninja Gaiden, R-Type.

I beat this one earlier this year, and it's hard as hell towards the end. It has some really cool ideas and a great protagonist, but I would not call it a good game personally.

I like Psychic World quite a bit, but I've only played it on Game Gear.

The Game Gear version is a lot nicer looking but shorter.

Aww but then you can't use this little guy:

You could always slap one of these on your NES controller for the same experience.

I had those as a kid. They were pretty garbage but so is the SMS D-Pad so you're right, same experience.

"Mushroom shaped stick" is on the box as a selling point. Alrighty then.

If I have one complaint about the SMS gamepad, it's that the cord comes off the right hand side of the thing. Kinda dumb considering your hand goes right there.

I hear this all the time, is it just an American thing? Perhaps it's only the case on Model 1 Master System consoles?

All the SMS controllers I've used and owned have had the cord come from the top.

Yeah I can't picture the cord thing myself. But I rarely ever used SMS controllers. Before I had a R5 I would just use Genesis controllers and, as mentioned, I now use NES controllers to play SMS games.

My Twin Fami controllers have the most annoying cords though. They come out the sides of the controllers and the most comfortable place to stick them is between my middle and ring fingers.

I'm not sure how prevalent it is. My Master System's gamepads had the sideways cord thing going on though. It was a USA console that I obtained in 1987 or thereabouts. It still works and it looks just like this:
