The dreamcast didn't die because the ps2 killed it, the dreamcast died because sega flat out gave up on it. I remember seeing some sales figures that showed that the dreamcast was starting to finally pick up a bit of steam before they pulled the plug on it.
Personally, I really wonder how the dreamcast would've fared against the far more powerful gamecube and xbox later in that generation.
Kinda unrelated, but there were some talks about the xbox being backwards compatible with DC games, but the deal fell through over online capabilities. It goes a way towards explaining why games like Panzer Dragoon Orta were xbox exclusive.
