What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Smile: Did something very, very good at work today. It'll be a few weeks before any recognition comes down the pike but I definitely feel like I put some points on the board today.

Frown: Damn I hate driving around San Antonio.

I don't know exactly how it all went down, but I'm guessing that guy in the wheel chair didn't deserve a face full of tear gas, nor did the kids that were there.

People make choices. Being present at a protest is a choice. If protesting was without risk, would there be any merit inherent to the cause?

I don't understand how you can have no sympathy for a disabled person and children being attacked with tear gas. I don't care what risks you take going to a protest -- if you're a police officer you don't do sick stuff like that.

Probably not, but if I wasn't ticked off by what I see in those videos, there probably wouldn't be much merit to the cause either.

Okay real quick: Being disabled does not make you a weakling. Some guy in a wheelchair might not be able to walk but if he is able bodied enough to roll himself down for a hearty dose of protesting, he's fair game when the crowd turns violent and the cops exercise their obligation to restore order.

Think he's in bad shape when tear gas hits? What about if the crowd goes nuts and starts burning things?

I have sympathy for someone who cannot walk but what you're asking me to do is pity him. I don't do that, it's condescending.

Secondly - where are those kids parents? What the hell were they thinking bringing their kids or allowing them to go?

Thirdly - I've been tear gassed before. It sucks but it goes away pretty quickly. Unless you have insane asthma (see my above point about choices and risk inherent to certain activities) tear gas isn't a big deal once you move away from it.

This isn't like it was Kent State, people.

^ A hearty Echo.

These "terrible" videos typically leave out the actions that lead up to the police response.

Hm, okay so I'm the villain here because I am actually able to express compassion for people? Right.

Don't turn this into a slippery slope argument. Seriously, no one called you a villain.

I am making the argument that people bear responsibility for their choices. If someone dies or is maimed, you'll see my compassion meter rise. If someone joins a crowd that gets harmlessly teargassed because they threw bricks and bottles at the police (who, contrary to popular opinion, largely do not get off on attacking civilians) then they had it coming.

I have no malice for them - I just hold people accountable for their actions.

Fair enough, I just find the whole situation a bit absurd.
