How long have preorders been around? I remember when the PS3 came out people camped out for days in the cold. Why didn't just preorder the console? Then they would have a guaranteed one and wouldn't have to sleep in the street.

I think a lot of the campers did pre-order. They just want to be one of the first people to get inside once GameStop/Best Buy/whatever opens.

That type of thing is insanity of course. You couldn't get me to camp outside in the cold for days or even hours.

Maybe if Sega released a new console and the pack-in game was a Ys/Phalanx crossover with hentai scenes.

That's just stupid.

I never understood the appeal of camping out for a console launch. I have had all my consoles shipped to my door while staying nice and warm in my home. I'll be doing the same thing for PS4/Xbone.

I did one better. I preordered it at GS. I'm going to wake up around 10-11 am, have a nice breakfast, watch some TV, then head off to GS. Only to walk in front of all the idiots waiting in line for the off chance there is a extra console. (evil laugh)

My best gaming memory deals with going to a midnight release for the Wii. "What was so great about it?" you might ask? Easy. At our local Meijer we were able to stay in the futon/beanbag chair section of the store. They had tables set up for us to sit and play cards and play the DS and the like. They only had about a dozen consoles, so there were only a few people there.

We bought a copy of monopoly in the store and played the crap out of that. The Management even let us set up an extension cord to a power outlet (as long as it didn't obstruct any aisle ways) so we could get a TV and modded Xbox set up.

Did not have to wait outside, got to sit on futons and bean bag chairs and got to play Xbox all day with a bunch of people. Friends were made and seriously one of the best launch day experiences of all time. I wouldn't have done it if I had to wait outside all day. That would have sucked.

Man, that's pricey. Perhaps like with films a few decades ago, Turkey can start making their own versions of those games. I can just imagine a Turkish Infamous.

The appeal of those midnight releases and camping out in the cold isn't really just getting the console or game early. It's all about the communal aspect. Getting to talk to your fellow gaming fanatics about how excited you are for the release. It's to speculate and discuss with your fellow gaming brethren.

Basically sums it up. Something you'll probably regret down the road, but hell they were fun in the moment. Always awkward to see people you worked with or knew but hadn't seen in years too, haha that always happened to me. Or people you wouldn't even think would be in line would be right there with you.

Anyways...
