Pretty darn ticked.

So, its been over a month since they started putting in my new mound septic system.

The size is based on number of bedrooms and soil composition. Cliff notes version, the original design (and subsequent contractor's bid) was based on a 4 bedroom with moderate soil composition (meaning it drains, but very slowly). So, they built a 60' long mound, about 6' high, 20' wide. The tank was to come out after the initial inspection.

Initial inspection failed. The county zoning commissioner claims my particular soil as weak composition (meaning it does not drain - of course it does drain, but it got the lowest grade, its clay and does drain very slowly).

Thus, we need a bigger mound. 80' long, 7' high, 25' wide.
Another inspection, another failure.

We need a bigger mound. 100' long, 8' high, 30' wide.
We passed inspection on Friday and the tank went in today.

The Tank - 2000 gallon beast - 14' long, 8' wide, 6' tall (not counting the observation and ventilation barrels).

But the kids at least have had something fun to watch watch.
In this pic, if you see the guys on the left, on top of the mound, that is the far left end, it runs 100' to the right. This thing is massive. Once seeded, it should not be near as much of an eyesore and they did really slope it, so its not a "wart" like some of the mound systems.

Needless to say, another 40' run of earth and pipe added to the bill. Not good.

Oh, I hate when that happens.

@mjmjr25 - I love seeing pictures of construction. It blows that you had to get a bigger tank/drain field because the soil doesn't drain well. So what's the cost up to now?

I had to spend $2K earlier this year to have a buried oil tank removed from my property. The original home owner (I'm the third) switched from oil to gas during the early 70s and just left the tank where it was after draining it. I could have left the tank in the ground but didn't want to take a chance of my house being an EPA Superfund site. So it was better to bite the bullet and get it out of the ground.

It was right at around 18K, not counting permit and design fees (another thousand roughly).

To keep things from getting ugly (we had a bid, but no formal contract - so not sure who would win if they demanded money and we refused money, etc) so to keep things civil, the contractor made an offer to do anything else at cost (no labor, just materials). So far its been almost 3K additional in dirt / gravel / topsoil and we should be out of the woods pending final inspection.

The things that are frustrating are thus:

Most people out here have "grandfathered systems" which are gravity based, sewage goes to a holding tank, holding tank has a pipe (or two or three) which run to the woods and dump. Zoning can't say anything about it (yet) so nothing is done, and in theory, a setup like that, can run forever. So its frustrating to "do the right thing" and have "the man come down on you" with added fees and hassle beyond the upfront cost.

On top of the older systems which really aren't good for where they are dumping (proper leech fields don't exist in these conditions, the clay is too compact) thus they just eventually put raw sewage into your woods. So on top of that, the reality is, they are no maintenance, no hassle. The new system is pumped "uphill" into the mound. This entails electric hookups - something we knew...but we didn't know wasn't covered by the contractor. Apparently most excavating contractors aren't licensed to do electric work, thus they don't do it - so that will be another bill. It runs on 2 -20amp breakers, which we don't have available, so instead of me doing a fairly basic electric patch, I have to hire someone to put in an additional breaker box. I'm conservatively guessing $400 for labor / parts.

Also, we came up with 3K to refinance our mortgage, and roll the cost of the system into our mortgage, that 3K was essentially lost as a closing fee, so in theory, none of the actual system is paid for yet - which was planned of course. The part that wasn't planned was needing the extra cash, so that is frustrating, its not like we are going to refinance again obviously.

Oh, and our asphalt driveway is mincemeat (we knew this, every contractor told us that would happen) but they are offering to fill it in w/limestone, which is decent until we can afford to pour proper concrete.

So yeah, long term it is good for the environment and we will have to pump the tank much less, and we don't have to worry if we have a heavy rainfall either (we were prompted initially to do this when we had heavy rain 3 straight days, the clay soil was saturated, our sewage had nowhere to go, but back in the house).

So ticked about the cost of course, and when you think about 22K and all these trucks, you cant' help but think, damn, I could've had an addition added to my house, or a new van, kitchen or 15 candy cabs :/

He's friends with Lemmiwinks.

Smile: My code monkey finally sent out an email blast that was scheduled for over two weeks ago. This email is going out to over 10k people/customers. Something I could have done two weeks ago, but she insisted to take care of it.

TICKED: The code monkey sent the blast out with the wrong reply email address. So now I have to set up a new address to forward the wrong email address to the right email address. Would be easy if I was using g-mail, but using corporate email, I'll have to request a license, then reroute the emails, all 10k of 'em. It's so easy too, all she had to do is "ctrl+c", then "ctrl+v".

Now part of this is my fault as I proofed the blast, but the links opened, the spelling was correct, and I've been waiting for something that should have gone out two weeks ago. If I spend 5 minutes proofing everything this girl does, I'll be hiring more interns.

^^Well, they divulge names, policies, and other sensitive information that are harmful to our soldiers at a minimum and our entire country in some instances. The intelligent "freedom of the press / free speech" crowd understands some things are meant to actually be "classified" for the greater good. Then the whackos ride the coat tails of heroes who fought for and established those rights, and take it at face value and literally don't comprehend the harm they are causing.

^"Code Monkey" must mean "secretary"? I'm not going to be clever or witty. A spade is a spade. Apparently anyone who doesn't share Luke's opinion, or more importantly make more money than Luke is an ass / imbecile. Is your goal to sound like a first class prick...cuz congrats, you did it! I'll make you a trophy.
