So I just started playing again, since June, and I am getting crushed.
I have never spent money, nor do I plan to spend money.
Can I still be competitive and enjoy this game without spending money?
If so, what it the best way to build my deck - rank, arena, etc?
And if I have to spend money what is the wises way to be frugal and get better decks?

Re: Hearthstone thread
Fred - you can defiinitely be competitive with basic cards and just a few epics. 2 of my best decks are almost exclusively basic cards.
Build a Face-Hunter, Aggro-Paladin, or Freeze-Mage deck. You can win matches all day in the 15-25 range with basic decks once you learn to use them consistently.

Re: Hearthstone thread
in my Hearthstone days I was generally doing Dailys for gold, then using that to do Arena runs - all Arena runs will end with you getting some cards. Keep what's good and dust what you don't need. No $ need be spent.

Re: Hearthstone thread
Ok, I have 850 gold, so I think I'll play the area a couple times (worst case scenario is that I pay 150 for a pack of cards). I will play ranked games to try to win daily stuff.
I will also try crafting, have not done that yet - any advise?

Re: Hearthstone thread
Build a Face-Hunter deck. Many of these cards are interchangeable if you don't have them; just get the closest thing. The premise of a Face or Aggro deck is to...attack the face. You rarely clear out minions unless you absolutely have too (taunt). It's a race to 30 damage and Hunter has the best cards to win that race; only Mage can come close. Face Hunter will struggle against guys who can heal or armor up (Priest, Warrior); or have lots of heal cards in their deck (Druid, Warlock).
An example deck:
Leper Gnome x2
Southsea Deckhand x2
Abusive Sergeant x2
Dire Wolf Alpha x1
Explosive Trap x2
Snake Trap x1
Bear Trap x1
Knife Juggler x2
Ironbeak Owl x2
Quick Shot x2
Glaivezooka x1
Eaglehorn Bow x2
Kill Command x2
Bloodsail Raider x1
Animal Companion x2
Arcane Golem x1
Unleash the Hounds x2
Dark Iron Dwarf x1
Piloted Shredder x1
You'll use your hero power often.
Unleash the hounds is used strategically - when your opponent has 3 or more minions, in most cases. If you get it out and lay Dire Wolf in the middle, each is doing 2 damage, depending on number of minions your doing 3-7+ damage, on charge.
Ironbeaks are used wisely - on taunts usually, really nice on something like a sludge belcher that has taunt and a deathrattle.
The pirates play off your weapon - your weapon can clear minions, or attack the face. Southsea deckhand has charge when you have a weapon loaded up, so you're looking at a 1-cost, 2 attack charge, drop him, then Abusive sergeant and it's a 2 cost, 4 attack charge.
Play a deck like this for awhile - you'll learn a ton about the game and it will lend itself to other strategies.
Let us know what you don't have from the list above - there are replacements in most cases, or you can craft some necessary cards.

Re: Hearthstone thread
I'm playing a super fun Warlock deck right now. It is control early and big demons late. You have to be willing to take some early damage and against Mage or Priest who have the ability to drop big hero damage spells on you, or Warrior / Rogue with hero attack - it can be very dicey around turn 8.
Getting your Mistress of Pain buffed is key to this deck - if you can give her demonfire or demonfuse - that's at least +3 health each attack, and just one or two of those are all you need to turn the board.
Void Terror is such a fun card, particularly if you play a power overwhelming on a nerubian egg - can end matches in a mean way.
Other times I I double drop Implosion on turn 8 - end up with 6 or 7 imps, drop Mal'Ganis on turn 9 and Jaraxxus on turn 10. So fun.
I also play a no-minion Hunter deck. It's the anti-face hunter deck. Control, hero-power 2 damage, over and over. Super frustrating for opponents.

I'm running an Aggro-Control-Fatigue Druid Deck...it really is all of those things. I love it.
Giants, Sappers, Deathlords and Dancing Swords. It can control or punish. Super fun - i'll share the whole deck if anyone's interested.
