Honestly, I dont really see how it is that unpopular to say 3rd Strike is better than SF2. Amongst the fighting game community, it is a pretty common opinion, and 3rd strike is well heralded.pierrot wrote:3rd Strike is easily my favorite fighting game on the Dreamcast, followed by Jojo. (Something about those CPS3 games, I guess.) GG XX Accent is probably the only fighter I enjoy more, and probably only because I'm actually almost halfway decent at it.
3rd Strike is just so silky smooth; excellent depth; 2d sprites ty vry much. Not nearly enough respect for the game. I think you might have copped out a little, noise. It's okay to say it: MM > OoT; 3rd Strike > SF II anything. Just because most people don't want to hear it doesn't make it less true.

Re: noiseredux vs. Sega
I suppose.
I think most people who grew up playing SF II in the arcades (which was a whole mess of people) seem to more often than not sing SF II's praises without so much as mention SF III. At least, that's the sense I get. SF III often feels like the forgotten fighter to me.

Re: noiseredux vs. Sega
well the difference is this: MM really is better than OOT. There's really no question there. But with 3rd Strike and SF2 super-aweome-mega-hyper-IIX-Turbo-the-best-for-matching-service-arcade-edition-remix, I feel like whichever game I'm playing at the moment is the one that I'll claim is my favorite.pierrot wrote: I think you might have copped out a little, noise. I think ultimately you've hit the nail on the head though. It's about nostalgia. I'm far more nostalgic about 2, as it's the one that pretty much made me love fighting games. And it's got a cast that is just so iconic that it's hard not to feel like it's "the one." But if both games were released today and I was playing them for the first time, I'd easily say 3 was the better game.
Re: noiseredux vs. Sega
I get where you're coming from. There's no real necessity to call one better than the other. Both have their merits, etc.
I enjoy SF2 still, but I think it really shows it's age, and the way 2d fighters have progressed, particularly in the last decade, I don't think that 3rd strike wouldn't as much, in the same amount of time. I think if you gave the two games to someone who had never even heard of the Street Fighter series (theoretically, of course) and asked them which game they preferred, 8 or 9 times out of ten, people would choose 3rd Strike. It's a sequel though, also; Ideally a sequel should be better, right?
Anyway, I'm not really trying to discredit the popularity of SF2, I just often scratch my head trying to figure out why 2 and 4 are so popular, while 3 is left to a more niche audience.

Re: noiseredux vs. Sega
I think it may have had something to do with the time period. During the time of it's release, was when consoles really started becoming the dominant source of game play when it came to the latest and greatest.
So unless you were a mallrat in arcades a lot , or one of the people who still put their faith in Sega after the CD and SAT foul-ups, then you may not have heard much about it during it's intial release. With most people I talk to personally, if you're into fighters, then Super SF 2 X and 3rd Strike are pretty much at a shared spot on most lists.
I think 4 gets more praise because it went back to the more methodical, deliberate style of the original games; after the slew of crazy combo-heavy, screen-filling supers and such of all the vs. iterations we were privvy to before it's release. IDK, just my 2 cents.

Re: noiseredux vs. Sega
Aaaww, yee-uh!
I know it isn't really Sega related (although it was a Mizuguchi project) but have you ever played any of the Lumines games, noise? SPFIIT was definitely my favorite puzzler from the day I first picked it up until the day I first played Lumines. The Vs isn't so much the focus like SPF, but if you're ever looking for another new puzzle game, and you haven't played it before, I'd recommend Lumines.
Either that, or Kururinpa. It's intrigued me for a while. (It's on the Saturn.)

oh hell yeah. I love Lumines. Big time. It's very high on my puzzle list. I have it on PSP and PS3... but I also have it on Dreamcast. Kind of. Have you played Irides?
