When you discover that importing titles from different regions is significantly impacting your profit potential of releasing the imported title in the region to which it is currently being imported. It doesn't make sense to localise a title that won't see anticipated sales numbers because gamers have already purchased it from another region. It also skews the popularity of a given franchise in a given region.

AKA you backpedal because CAPITALISM and SHAREHOLDERS.

(Of course, now there's a pretty boss flash cart (Gateway 3DS) that lets you run ROMs from any region on your 3DS...which renders the whole reasoning moot. Now those who want to, can, and don't even have to buy the games at all. WTG.)

Frankly, I think region locking a HANDHELD is silly. I understand the reasoning in today's console market, but I travel with my handheld! I really want to be able to play stuff like Puyo Puyo vs. Tetris. What they should do is have some sort of sales tracking for games that are purchased by people outside a region, and use THAT sales data to gauge interest in certain titles/franchises for release outside the region. I can't believe that enough people import that it would throw off sales numbers that significantly.

On topic, I have really been enjoying some games that I purchased from the 3DS eShop, and I have (or will very soon purchase*):

Box Boy*
Crashmo*
Gunman Clive
Gunman Clive 2
The Mysterious Murasame Castle*
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies
Pushmo
Summer Carnival '92: Recca*
VVVVVV

Given that I always opt for the physical copy of a game over the digital one are there any other games on the 3DS eShop I should consider purchasing?

Also, and while I have a large collection of vintage games (i.e., nearly every game available on the 3DS eShop), I do not have a Game Gear or any Game Gear games. Should I pick up any of those?
Pick up both Shinobi games on GG, they're pretty great.

Is the 3DS the only region-locked handheld ever?

I love the overly literal Japanese titles of those games: The GG Shinobi and The GG Shinobi II.

Nintendo handheld. And technically the DSi-enhanced games were region locked, but there was only a handful of those.

Well what non-Nintendo handhelds are region-locked? I have Japanese GG games and PAL NGPC games... Where does that leave us? The Lynx?

Isn't the PSP region locked in some fashion? Or the Vita?

No and no. PSN accounts are region-specific, physical media is not.

Yeah I have North American, European, Japanese, and Korean PSP games. :o

It's epic.

Maybe someday when 3DS's are $50 a pop I'll get a Japanese one.
