I really wonder how effective spam links are, can't imagine people actually clicking on the links in these things. I really don't understand the strategy.

Even if people don't click on them where they're posted, search engine spiders pick them up and boost the rank of the sites because there are more mentions of them. So then they show up higher in the search engine results when someone is searching for something similar. That leads to garbage search results and then people clicking onto the scammy sites from there even if people are unlikely to click them in forums and whatnot. There are spammers that sign up and put links in their profiles and never even post. Those get indexed as well if not cleaned out. So yeah.
