I feel similarly, though I think my interests do stretch to the very late 90's and the cusp of the 2000's. There was still money then for a TV series that didn't have a toy tie-in.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Just got a Dirty Pair DVD collection. This is amazing stuff!!!
I just love so much from this era. I suppose I'm a fan of "classic anime" moreso than anime in general.

Anime from the late 80s through the 90s was the golden period of the format. You're not wrong. The overall quality of the medium started going downhill midway through the 00s.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I just love so much from this era. I suppose I'm a fan of "classic anime" moreso than anime in general.
I think you would enjoy this series Bone:

I say watch it online because IIRC no English publisher owns the rights to it anymore. I'm not sure it's being sold anywhere first hand these days.
And if you're really feeling sporty:

I enjoy what I've seen of Lodoss. Some great video game adaptations too.
And I really need to snag that Ys anime someday, but the prices just seem to keep rising.
In other news, I joined the Crunchyroll forums today. Noticed that there were a bunch of old farts like myself over there so I said why the hell not.

Thanks. I actually spotted Bubblegum Crisis at Best Buy the other day, of all places. I'll probably head back to pick it up.

Bubblegum Crisis is awesome. I love that series. There's a surprising amount of it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubblegum_ ... 8series%29
I've seen ALL of that, except the Scramble Wars stuff.
If you're low on cash, the very best of the series is Bubblegum Crisis & Bubblegum Crash. Although the Hurricane Live specials are not to be missed IMO. You can probably catch those on Youtube though.
I'm gonna get out of here before I start dorking out about all the great late 80s/early 90s anime that's flooding my head right now.

Just make sure it isn't Bubblegum Crisis 2040, which is a remake that most fans consider inferior!BoneSnapDeez wrote:Thanks. I actually spotted Bubblegum Crisis at Best Buy the other day, of all places. I'll probably head back to pick it up.
I was never wild about Bubblegum Crisis TBH. I mean, it has cool stuff, but it's a little too Blade Runner-y for my taste (it's basically half Blade Runner, half Streets of Fire but with more ladies in robot-suits). But I'd say it's still worth watching for its "historical" value. It's fun enough but it's not really good. I mean, the overall story is a complete mess, which reflects a lot of behind-the-scenes messiness in the series' production.
On the other hand, I love the AD Police Files spinoff. It's trying REALLY HARD to be SUPER GRIMDARK and EDGY CYBERPUNK to the point of just being completely ridiculous in an over-the-top and kind of awesome sort of way. It's not for everyone: the series is kind of like the Rob Liefeld comics of anime... you can't take them seriously even though they seem to be taking themselves EXTREMELY seriously.
(Just don't confuse that with the AD Police TV show, being a spinoff of Bubblegum Crisis 2040. I have the first volume on laserdisc and it's just about unwatchable.)

How is "too Blade Runner-y" a bad thing?
I think 2040 is still pretty good, but yeah I was mainly thinking of the original there for Bone. The music, animation, art, 80's insanity doesn't get much better. It admittedly doesn't have too much substance, it certainly isn't GITS or anything...but the charm is definitely maximum, I just love the vibe.
Time capsule to the majestic 80's!
My second favorite, I think these are literally official AMV's that are on the DVD's.

I finally caved to peer pressure and started watching attack on titan. I'm only a few episodes in, but i can see why everyone is so crazy about it.
Also on my to do list is Dragon Ball / Z / GT. i'm pretty sure i've seen every episode. but i've never actually seen it in order. so that's my goal after attack on titan.

Do yourself a huge favor and don't watch GT.
Trust me, you will either... thank me later, or regret it!
Also I'm one who even watched it in Japanese, but no nothing about that made it any better or more authentic/legit. It's terrible, Toriyama does his damndest to retcon it with all the new stuff coming out, and yeah. It's not canon and completely terrible.
