I've managed to avoid all spoilers and pretty much anything about the game all these years. I have a few articles about the game bookmarked for many years, just waiting until after I finish the game.

This is my favorite game of all time. It's beautifully crafted. Enjoy.

Ack wrote:Well, I just beat Ys III on the SNES. Now I'm wondering about all the "lesser" RPGs that people don't really discuss when talking about the console. Games like Drakkhen, Arcana, Robotrek, Paladin's Quest, 7th Saga, Eye of the Beholder, Super Ninja Boy, etc. A lot of folks seem to focus on the quality titles like the Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, the Breath of Fires, etc. But what else is worth checking out?

So how did you like Ys III?

I love The 7th Saga. If you're looking for an incredibly difficult "Western" JRPG with a great atmosphere, give it a go. It's definitely an acquired taste, but I enjoyed it immensely.

I'd like to check out some of those "lesser-known" games you mentioned later this year. They tend to be cheaper than the well-known titles, which is nice.

I do own Eye of the Beholder and Drakkhen. Eye of the Beholder is okay... It's a Western RPG (D&D) of course, I'd honestly rather just play the Abandonware DOS version.

Drakkhen is kinda cool, but my god is it weird. You have to go into it with the right mindset. It's hard to explain - play it and you'll see what I mean. The game's sequel, Dragon View, is also on the SNES though I haven't played it.

Paladin's Quest is a game I'd like to try some day - seems like it could be a hidden gem. The sequel, Lennus II, is also on the SNES but it's Japan-only (there is an English ROM hack though).

I really can't get enough of SNES RPGs...

Yeah Lennus II looks pretty cool, like a weird take on Phantasy Star or something. Not sure how sci-fi Paladin's Quest is, but visually Lennus II looks pretty out there.

I'm going to start Cosmic Fantasy 2 on Turbo CD. It was released in 1992 and localized by Working Designs. The game looks "generic", which is exactly what I'm in the mood for.

I actually do own Cosmic Fantasy 1, but I'm feeling lazy and don't want to play through a Japanese-language RPG. If I like 2, I'll check out 1 (and maybe buy 3 & 4).

How's Eye Of The Beholder on the SNES? I've only played the Sega CD version which was absolutely INCREDIBLE. Also, they asked Yuzo Koshiro to make the soundtrack and it's just like the PC version, with an improved ending.

SNES is probably the weakest port that I've played (not counting the GBA version, which is really a completely different game). Still a decent title though, check it out if you liked the Sega CD version that much.

How is corpse party technically an rpg? While I like the game, I wouldn't consider it an rpg.

My girlfriend finally started playing Final Fantasy IV (she actually played some of the piano versions of certain songs years before). This is why I play games: to see her face replete with wonder as she explores, to hear her gasp every time (so far) there's a random battle, to see her have the dancer of Baron strip not once, not twice, but thrice, each time with a bigger grin on her face.

This is going to be fun.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 is pretty great.... or at least it was great back when I originally played it (at release). The biggest problem I remember is that the random battles were a bit over done. Sometimes, you'd take 2 steps between every encounter. That could get a bit tedious.
