I get that - my point was just that during their lifespan I found a lot of interesting non-Nintendo games to sustain my own personal interest in the system. This is not so with the lineup for the Wii U thus far, and if I picked one up I'd grab probably entirely first party titles.AppleQueso wrote:Those are also effectively "dead" systems who's libraries have already ran their course. It's a lot easier to pick out the good third party gems after the system has ran on for a few years I think.dsheinem wrote: I have far more third party exclusives for the Wii and Gamecube than I do first party Nintendo stuff.
Wii-U thoughts so far

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Simple math here as to why the Wii U will survive and be a success. Compare titles on the big three last gen that were made for 5-12 year old kids. Now look at what is available this gen for the same age group.
Wii U is NOT the console for those who need to see animated tits. It is the console for those whose parents (who have the money) want their kids to re-live what they lived in their youth. None of this comes down to a superior machine. Nintendo fills a gap and has since way back in the 16 bit days. Anyone remember Mortal Kombat on the SNES? Green blood folks while Sega got red.
The Wii U is not for GTA V fans. While they do release some more adult titles it is not their main focus. Never has been.

Hyperbole aside, this outlook is basically why the Gamecube was seen as a relative failure for and by the company.wclem wrote:Simple math here as to why the Wii U will survive and be a success. I agree with both points... yet as I'm older I understand.dsheinem wrote:Hyperbole aside, this outlook is basically why the Gamecube was seen as a relative failure for and by the company.wclem wrote:Simple math here as to why the Wii U will survive and be a success. I agree that I though the Cube was a failure since I was in the "want to play GTA" category, but now I don't care about GTA (or my kids seeing it so it's on my PC) so I am excited to have a WiiU.
I know this didn't add anything to the conversation, but this is my favorite thread running right now. So in the end, what measures success - how many units are sold or total profit? If it's profit doesn't the first party titles that Nintendo sells well play a huge role?

Do you think the Wii followed a different formula? I thought it was a worse offender and look at its success.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I find it funny that someone would say I hate Nintendo or I want it to fail. For all the Sega love in my avatar and sig, it was only Sonic that turned me into a Mega Drive kid. Other than that, all the retro consoles I bought/want to own are Nintendo ones. Specially the SNES which I adore.
All I am complaining about is the unnecessary bad design of the Wii U hardware wise. Specifically the processor which seems to be really expensive and slow, because Nintendo wanted a "green" processor which wouldn't heat up the unit that much. So basically they thought the reason the Wii was succesful was because it was so small, and they chose to compromise power from the Wii U just to fit it in a pretty enough case. If that isn't stupid, I don't know what is.

Come on guys, we are just questioning some of Nintendo's decisions. Why is everyone being so defensive? If we were talking about the Xbone, yes I'd be trolling cause I hate MS's consoles, but I like Nintendo and I will buy a Wii U. I don't understand this playground mentality where we are not allowed to question anything about a console we love :S

They really have no idea wtf made the Wii a hit. I mean granted, nobody else really knows for certain either (look at the mostly botched attempts that Sony and Microsoft made to tap into those markets) but still.
If anyone is interested and has the time this recent Nintendo World Report podcast talks a lot about what's going on with the Wii U sales wise. I think they put it in good perspective.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I think Nintendo banked on motion controls with the Wii and were rewarded for doing so: it created a big enough install base that a wider variety of titles than what had appeared on the Gamecube could appear on the Wii.wclem wrote:

And for the record, I like Nintendo and hope they succeed with the Wii U or figure out another console strategy. I am just trying to make sense of why they haven't so far.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
To take that example in a different direction, the SNES was just as capable of running a competent port of Mortal Kombat as its competition was. They weren't banking on an NES with a fancy controller to keep up, instead they fielded a system that was capable of hosting the kind of content that consoles had at the time.wclem wrote: Wii U is NOT the console for those who need to see animated tits. I mean, I don't disagree that the Wii U is, so far, just fine for delivering the "Nintendo experience" in a definite step up from any other Nintendo console. Outside of never wanting to see the Miiverse, ever, I've been pretty happy with my Wii U as a conduit for Nintendo-ey stuff. No more blurry, bordered Wii output with jittery Wiimote input on the menu. Controller stuff is more normal.
It's still closer to last-gen hardware though, and if/when software that wouldn't have been feasible on the PS3 or 360 starts coming out, chances are the Wii U won't be able to push it either. 8-bit consoles weren't very suited towards fighters, 16-bit weren't suited for 3D platformers or FPS, 32-bit wouldn't have had a fun time with open world/sandbox, and so on.
What Nintendo has is fine for retreading their previous efforts with a little more polish. It's not particularly ideal for doing new things, regardless of how "adult" the content involved would be.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I want more Miiverse! I enjoy the integration in NSMBU and 3D World. I get disappointed when games have weak integration like Lego City (just allows sending photos to friends) or Pikmin (no integration).
