Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
Oh man, I was hoodwinked this weekend, sorry for not posting updates until now!
Things went okay last Fight Night! We had TSTR, mjmjr25 and briefly Sevin0seven show up. VS came and went kinda fast, as did 3S. Then a few hrs of SF4 to cap off the night.
TSTR- observations on your SF4 game from last night:
You tend to hit buttons up close (even when at disadvantage or being hit), which is still getting you into a lot of trouble. You tend to fall into patterns pretty quickly, especially when ahead on life, just stay a little more patient even when someone is on top of you.
The main aspect of your game you need to improve is punishment. A multitude of times last night when your opponent disastrously whiffed an ultra or DP, the best you conjured was a throw or a sweep, or even worse... a whiff or late reaction of your own. Now of course online factors into this, we all feel that pain from time to time... but you consistently were leaving huge chunks of damage on the table, and it lost you a bunch of matches that you should have won.
This week, work on just blocking various DPs, specials and Ultras and learn how to do the most damage after blocking them, consistently.
Easy misses you consistently did nothing against:
Chun-Li Lightning kick- Jon the Don did not hit confirm into these, he just threw it out more than a few times. You can Sweep or Fierce DP this on block.
Whiffed DPs/Ultras- Do a simple punish like f.HP, c.HP, F.DP or if that 1 frame link is hard on you, just do c.HP into Tatsu or if you have meter- M.DP FADC into Ultra (you should always make sure you are used to FADC into Ultra, it's one of Ryu's best offensive and defensive options and essential to his gameplan, imo. (These punishes also work on Cammy's blocked meaty RH.Spiral Arrows)
Rose's meaty Soul Spiral (meaty in this instance meaning that you blocked it and she is not at tip range and ends recovery in your hitbox)- You can get c.MP into XX as a punish for this or just c.MK into XX.
A quote from Phil- "Certain tactics work better online than off. So I'd recommend getting noonie's input as he still plays ryu online. Only advice I'd have is that once you find that doing one set of things over and over is working fine and getting you wins...try getting wins by playing differently and see what else you can do. Online play tends to be a trap because you don't get instant feedback on when there's a hole in your gameplan. The messiness of online play tends to mask that".
So yea, just work on things one at a time TSTR. Fixing little things and get your game more solid each session. Online SF is by no means perfect, but it can still help you advance your basics and mental approach to the game, as long as you don't preoccupy yourself with 'what ifs' and 'whoulda shoulda couldas'.
-----------------------
As for next game night, I am thinking maybe Wednesday this week @ 8pm
I think I would like to rally the troops for Tekken again, maybe with some Tag 2 or TR? Toss in some DoA or SC5 to make some 3D roundabouts? Of course SF4 can be the defacto fall back, if only for TSTR because he is the only one that shows every time so far
If Weds doesn't work out for most, I am open to flexing to Thursday or Friday, just LMK.

Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
Thanks! I'm totally aware that punishing is one of my weakest aspects. I tend to fall into the trap of "oh shit, they whiffed that, what do I do, uh, uh, SWEEP!" I definitely need to spend more time in the lab working on getting solid stuff down to punish with. I feel like the CPU actually may be of some use in this case, since it tends to just throw out random specials which can easily be used for punish practice (in addition to just doing the usual dummy record/playback).cha cha wrote:analysis
I feel like the longer I play in one sitting, the more I increase my patience level and handle pressure better. At the beginning of the night I was definitely mashing a lot more buttons than by the end. That's just something that comes with playing more and more, I reckon.
Anywho, your advice confirms the things I know I need to be working on. Thanks for sticking with me!
Different topic—I didn't realize it, but later that evening I was playing around with my PSP and saw I had Darkstalkers Chronicle on there. Loaded it up, and man that game is fun! Never spent any real time with the Vampire games before, but I'm for sure gonna have to get Resurrection for future nights we play that again.
I could easily be coerced into playing TR this week (free is nice, yes). If we're looking at 3D stuff, my only other option is VF5. Regardless, I'll still be there to lighten up stream chat with copious amounts of 8====>
Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
I am totally okay with TR, it's a great Tekken game for newcomers and neophites. My only concern is that you only get 5 free coins to play vs others with (they regenerate 30 mins at a time, to a max of 5), so unless you paid for premium coins (which you retain if you win) or earned premium tickets (same as coins), every person without will only have 5-6 matches, unless we got like 6 in the lobby, then the regen rate might sustain a few people.
The coin is good for most people, as the prospect of loss on a premium coin/ticket makes them play harder (and get salty quicker
), and though losses are not recorded (such a carebear game), the true cost of losing is the potential of being locked out of playing for 15-30 mins... which might hurt enthusiasm after 30 mins has transpired.
It is a FREE game however, and you can unlock most characters (if there is a particular you want that isn't in the starting cast) through sheer grind. So I would expect less cop outs on a night where we get to play A FREE GAME, that ANYONE here can download and TRY OUT. *wink wink*
Thoughts?
