What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
I think the big problem I have with dubs are that Japanese has certain features that just don't exist in English. Honorifics are the big one that come to mind. I watched an ep of the FMA dub and while the voices were done well there's just no good translation for Nii-san that doesn't sound awkward. Similarly it's easy to lose out on some of the nuance of the character interaction when you lose the honorifics.

For me my philosophy is to just watch anything in it's original intended language. Whether that's Chinese films, Korean films or animated stuff, American cartoons in English, etc and so I prefer anime in Japanese. Of course, some of my friends here and there prefer dubs and if they've got something on when we're hanging out it doesn't bother me. But my preference is definitely Japanese.
Bebop's dub was awesome, although Megumi Hayashibara voices Faye so I'd like to rewatch it in Japanese someday for her alone almost, haha. Damn sexy voice... and she's an awesome singer, I'm not one for J-Pop, but I'll tune into her stuff.

This, 100%. That means there are a select few anime that I actually prefer in English: Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, The Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight, the upcoming Thundercats reboot... stuff that was originally produced in English, I watch in English rather than dubbed into Japanese.Xeogred wrote:For me my philosophy is to just watch anything in it's original intended language. True. Constantly hearing "Big Brother" and "Big Sister" just seems out of place in english. Accurate translation or not, it just seems awkward.MrPopo wrote:I think the big problem I have with dubs are that Japanese has certain features that just don't exist in English. Pretty positive Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is as Japanese as it can get (Amano did the art, heh), but yeah. You're right about the others, I'd rather watch that stuff dubbed too. And for something like the new Supernatural anime, I'd actually probably rather watch that dubbed too (and I heard they got the original actors to work on it as well).flamepanther wrote:This, 100%. As for the current Marvel related anime shows though, I wish they'd just die... right now. They look and sound absolutely terrible. Imagine America making a Gundam series or something, oh man.

Amano inspired the art (the final animation character designs were by Yutaka Minowa), and the animation direction is all-Japanese, as is the story. However, the musical score is Western, and the film was originally screened in English in 2000. Recording of the Japanese dialogue began in 2001. Even the Japanese trailers for the film were in English--as that was the language originally intended by the director.Xeogred wrote:Pretty positive Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is as Japanese as it can get (Amano did the art, heh), but yeah.
Imagine? Americans have already tried to make new USA-original versions of Mach Go Go Go (two of them: "The New Adventures of Speed Racer" and "Speed Racer: The Next Generation") and a Macross/Mospeada/Southern Cross mash-up ("Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles"). There's a new American remake of Go Lion (Voltron) in the works as we speak! I reserve judgment on the new Voltron, but the other two are indeed awful.Imagine America making a Gundam series or something, oh man.

There are some animes that I've watched in their entirety in both English and Japanese. There are definitely instances when a dub is able to come through and bring a welcomed new spin on the overall presence the series creates, and successfully show the characters in a different (but believable) light. Cowboy Bebop is one of them, Berserk is another. There are also instances when the dub is worth watching just because it's hilarious, like G Gundam.Xeogred wrote:Bebop's dub was awesome, although Megumi Hayashibara voices Faye so I'd like to rewatch it in Japanese someday for her alone almost, haha.

Let it be known that Evangelion is not one of them. Spike Spencer... oh god. I hated Eva for like 8 years because of the dub, finally rewatched it last year in Japanese and it was actually tolerable. Still not the END AND BEGINNING OF ANIME to me or anything, but yeah. It was watchable.
@flamepanther: That is pretty weird how that worked out. I guess as for Amano he could be credited as the "original artist", since I know a friend that has some artbooks and such. But yeah it seems you usually get other artists for anime adaptations and such.

That particular era of anime dubbing saw a bizarre trend of whiny super-nasal voices, and ADV was one of the worst offenders. It wasn't just them though. The dub of Tenchi Muyo was like nails on a chalkboard to me for the very same reason.Xeogred wrote:Let it be known that Evangelion is not one of them. Spike Spencer... oh god.
