Atleast use the Japanese abbreviation NGC because a) it makes sense and b) they're the ones who made the console
AppleQueso wrote:"oXbox" will continue to be useful so long as people still refer to the 360 as "the Xbox"
People who call the 360 the Xbox are equally wrong as people who call the Xbox the oXbox. In fact they're a lot more wrong. At least you can tell what people are referring to when you say oXbox. The Xbox on the other hand is just wrong. Like I said, people don't call the The Nintendo Wii "oWii" because Wii U was released.
Besides that's a piss poor way to handle things. If people are idiots, you correct them, rather than accommodate to their idiocy.
AppleQueso wrote:Nobody in the history of ever has actually heard someone say "I'm gonna go play my PSX" and actually thought they were talking about the fucking DVR.
Because there aren't any people in the world who own a PSX? That doesn't make the use of an outdated and incorrect term any more right.

I agree with you. But I saw "oXbox" being used on these forums long before the announcement of the Xbox one

Yup. I'll say it again:
I don't care what people call the systems and it doesn't matter as Mom's will always call it a Nintendo.

Yes, and I was one of the people using that term. The reason is that since the 360 is three times more popular than the original Xbox and has lived twice as long, it was most people's first Xbox. To them, it is
the Xbox.

The notion that you should use incorrect terminology because there are a lot of uneducated and ignorant people in this world is appalling to me. You see people calling the 360 "the Xbox"? Correct them. If they're casual gamers and too lazy to do any kind of research, inform them about their mistake. Then they won't do it again, problem solved. How would schools work if children were never taught anything? Instead of informing the children that it's "you" and not "u", teachers would instead start using the word "u" instead and so on.
PSX is an obscure piece of hardware that was only released in Japan, but Xbox is not an obscure or rare console.

So instead of saying oXbox so that everyone immediately knows which console I mean, I should say Xbox and have to explain that I'm talking about the original Xbox and tell them to call the 360 the 360?

Yes. A=A B=B. A=C B=A doesn't make sense.
Besides that, your reasoning behind the term is flawed.
If the people aren't aware that The Xbox exists, to them the "original Xbox"=Xbox 360. How would they immediately know that you talk about the console that they don't know even exists? So the end result is: "There's an original Xbox?" ->Yes -> You end up explaining it to them. So it's just more logical to correct them than to try to use some other term when the end result is the same and they're the ones who are wrong, not you.
If they can separate in their mind that "oXbox"=Xbox and "Xbox=Xbox 360", then they already know that the Xbox exists. In which case they should call the Xbox the Xbox and the Xbox 360 the 360, because calling the Xbox 360 the Xbox is incorrect.

As I recall, "GCN" was used because, "NGC" was already taken. I don't remember by what, but are you quite certain the GameCube is abbreviated as "NGC" in Japan?

Yes, this would endear one to all of the peoples, and garner him many a friend.
If you wanted to try to lead by example, that would be one thing, but imagining that you'll change people's behavior by making them look stupid is bound to leave you an unhappy person. Good luck with whichever path you choose, I suppose.

Clearly people who can't say console names correctly should lose the right to vote. We can't have idiots like that deciding who rules the country.

The GameCube (ゲームキューブ Gēmukyūbu?, officially called Nintendo GameCube, abbreviated NGC in Japan and GCN in North America)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameCubeIt's always brand name first, product name second.
Sega Master System/Mega Drive/Saturn/Dreamcast. NES/SNES/Nintendo 64/Nintendo Wii/Nintendo Wii U
It's inconsistent with the logic used in all other consoles if you call it GameCube Nintendo and not the other way around.

If people are concerned about looking stupid, then they should make sure that they don't say anything that makes them look stupid. Finding out from Google/Wikipedia that Xbox 360 is not the first console that uses the name Xbox is neither hard nor time consuming. You are acting like it's some kind of grave insult to be corrected when spouting incorrect terms. Life is a continuous learning process, and being uneducated or incorrect are not the same as being stupid.

Maybe we should make a thread about this.
