Out Run 3-D $75

Jesus, is this really the going rate for Out Run 3D? I remember importing that game back in like 99, CIB, for less than $20.

Good posts, SonicRetard. I still disagree of course. 8)

I love platformers myself, but let me reiterate that there's nothing on the SMS that comes close to Super Mario Bros 3, Mega Man 2, or Contra in terms of speed, fluency, tight control, and overall experience.

And as a lover of sports games, Sega's hilariously-named "Great" series lags way behind the best titles on NES (Tecmo Bowl, Baseball Stars, Blades of Steel, etc).

I will admit my opinion is based solely on my impressions of NTSC games, as I haven't looked into imports for either system.

And I do agree with aaron - the Master System always feels "slow" to me. I don't know how much of this is real or imagined, or how much has to do with game design or actual hardware limitations.

That said, I do love the SMS and I'm slowly building a modest collection of games. While I vastly prefer the NES, I'll take of the SMS over any other 8-bit system or computer.

To be fair here, the definition he's using for "platformer" is pretty narrowly defined and excludes Mega Man and Contra and the like.

I can definitely see a case made for the SMS platformer library if we're excluding those.

It's definitely imagined. The hardware is much more capable than the NES, and the CPU is roughly the same speed as the SNES CPU.

Indeed, I define games like Contra and Megaman as action titles. Although I could also make an argument towards Master System action games. It's admittedly a weaker genre for the system, but I don't think it's quite night or day like it gets framed.

Perhaps I'll do a follow up post extolling the virtues of action games like Ninja Gaiden or Master of Darkness on the SMS. but not right now, because I'm at work and technically I should be working (although I'm not :P)

Yeah action titles is gonna be a really hard case to make. That was flat out the NES's bread and butter.

especially by the end of the system's lifetime, when the formula had been so refined that virtually any company could pump out a great action title.

I doubt I could argue that the SMS is a superior action games machine, but I can certainly argue that it's more servicable than it gets recognition for being. It's not a library of Cyber Shinobi games like it gets played off as.

Now Shmups? I can argue all day long for SMS supremacy. Platformers? I already did. RPGs? But action games would be tough.

Also, I forgot to mention the Donald Duck games in my platformers post. If anybody is serious about checking out the SMS platformers, definitely check out the donald duck games, especially Lucky Dime Caper, which is the SMS counter part to Quackshot.

I agree. My first impression of the Master System was playing an emulator and, to be honest, I was thoroughly unimpressed. When I got my hands on a real system and tried that out, the difference was enormous. I still can't play SMS on an emulator. I think it's the sound. The games I have sound fine on a TV, but sound terrible on an emulator. I don't know why that is (my NES emulator doesn't have that issue), but there ya go.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

best i can tell $75 is conservative. i tried to price it fairly but ultimately i'm not married to that price so i'm up for whatever. there aren't too many instances of the game (the US version anyway) coming up on the 'bay, or really anywhere, let alone a complete, NM copy like the one i have.

'99 was 14 years ago, too 8)
