Me too. But that's not to say the Dowsing isn't useful. Usually I can get by without it, but some things it's pretty much necessary.AppleQueso wrote:I'd usually just tap it and then tap it again.Zing wrote:Instead of "hey, listen", you get the annoying beeping sound, both from her directly and the dousing icon. The dousing thing is ridiculous. It literally never stops until you press the douse button.

There has only been one part so far where it was necessary. "Sand Ship"
Anyone actually use the map beacons? I put a few on the desert map, but have since forgotten them.

I've used them a few times in the Skyloft overworld thing when I'd see something interesting looking on the map.Zing wrote:There has only been one part so far where it was necessary. "Sand Ship"

Dousing was particularly useful to me looking for those key shards in Eldin.

Still working my way through the mines. I'd be done with them by now if I didn't have so much other crap to do

Well, I still haven't started Skyward Sword, mostly because I've been way too busy. My guide book arrived today though, and it looks great! Thankfully there is furigana, so I can understand it fine.
Re: Skyward Sword, thoughts so far?
Finished the Mines (finally!)! Huzzah!
Re: Skyward Sword, thoughts so far?
I had my first real bullshit moment™ the other day. It wasn't enough to make me upset, but it was pretty goddamn ridiculous.
Early in the game, I found something sticking out of the ground. Let's call it a Party Hat. I couldn't interact with the Party Hat in any way, so I made a mental note of it and moved on. A while later, I ran into someone who claimed to have lost their Party Hat. Great, I know exactly where the Party Hat is. I make my way back to the Party Hat and still, I cannot interact with the Party Hat.
I move on, thinking I need a tool of some sort to dig the Party Hat out of the ground. Much later, I acquire the usage of a Party Hat Retriever Robot. So, I make my way back to the Party Hat. I still cannot interact with the Party Hat, despite knowing why the hat is there, who needs it, and how to return it to its owner.
Puzzled, I head back to the Party Hat's owner for further questioning. He whines about his lost Party Hat, but suddenly Fi decides to chime in about how we should go look for the Party Hat. I make the trek back to the Party Hat (with Fi stopping to mention the Party Hat a few times along the way) and, of course, now I can retrieve the Party Hat.
Thanks, Nintendo. This isn't the first time you have done this to me. Remember that shitty "artsy" game called Trace Memory? Remember how I found a toolbox with a wrench in it, and I tried to pick up the wrench but you wouldn't let me? Remember how I later had a "puzzle" that required a wrench-like object, so I wasted precious heartbeats and breaths wandering around looking for something, anything that would work? Anything but that wrench, because, hey, I already tried to get the wrench and it wasn't able to be picked up. Then right before giving up on the game forever, I checked that toolbox again and suddenly the wrench was an item I could pick up?
Did someone from Trace Memory work on Skyward Sword or what?

That's the exact opposite of how earlier Zelda games were (well, at least the 8/16 bit ones). Remember in Link to the Past when you could (although you you really had to ignore a lot in order to do this) pick up the mushroom in the Lost Forest and not know what the hell it was for, and then only later you see a witch who asks for it? Yeah, you could do that. It was possible, but now? Jeez, I hope Twilight Princess isn't like this, is it? Otherwise, I may just permanently pass on these games.

I honestly can't remember if TP had a moment like that or not. Hell I can't remember if Wind Waker had a moment like that or not. It's been a long time since I've played either of those... I don't think I remember Ocarina or Majora's Mask having moments like that either.o.pwuaioc wrote:Jeez, I hope Twilight Princess isn't like this, is it? Honestly i'm reasonably sure the uh, "party hat" thing might be the only instance of that in SS. I know I don't recall anything else like that. SS is a lot more on-railsy feeling than most Zelda games though so I wouldn't be too surprised.
