Yeah, I was just reading that Alien Solder and the Mega Man collection was released in Eurpoe on the Mega Drive. That just leaves the question of how the lockout works on the Genesis. If it's on cart, then I can use those ROMs. I don't think that the lockout is IN the ROM, but if it is, that would suck lol

The both sound like games I would love to own though, so thanks for the suggestions!

Basically any PAL or JPN only Mega Drive games, are what you should make.
Or if there are extremely rare NTSC games, but I'm not sure about those.

I have paid big money to acquire Daze Before Christmas, Mega Man The Willy Wars, Duke Nukem 3D, Nightmare Circus (hasn't arrived yet) and a couple others. I would probably turn around and sell my real copies of some of them, especially if a 50Hz to 60Hz speed correction patch was available for some of these ROMs.

For most of the MegaDrive's (or Genesis' if you prefer) life, cartridges were
produced without any sort of territory protection. Some games even had multiple
languages for different territories, Neo Geo-style. However, later in the
MegaDrive's life, Sega and several third-party developers decided to start
implementing a software territory lock-out to keep people from playing games
outside of the territory they were intended for.


So I guess I'll have to take it as a "by game" thing.

Alien Soldier and Mega Man both have region lock out :(

Right, unless hacks of some kind have been produced, but that is
doubtful for most, as they probably just built the workarounds into
the emulators themselves. There was little reason to do otherwise
before we all went reproduction and flash cart crazy

Oh, I forgot about the 50/60Hz thing. Damn.

Most of the games work fine at 60Hz, just a tad faster music
and game play on some, which doesn't bother me at all.
Some run perfectly (and are timed correctly) when
running at 60Hz. Usually the only real issue to getting
the ones without software lockouts to work, is that
JPN Mega Drive games have a extra notch in them
that makes fitting them in Genesis consoles
not possible, unless you modify the port
some how, or buy a hard to find region
adapter.

So for most games, you should be OK, I would think.
Then again, I'm not a Sega Genesis expert either, I just started getting into them when the clones became available.

The Gen Mobile plays most PAL / JPN / NTSC carts perfectly, though I can't get Duke Nukem 3D to boot, and Daze Before Christmas won't let me get past the map screen for some reason. I think the latter is related to the fact that it has a 2 player mode, and it might be doing some funky controller port scan in the code to look for the presence of two controller ports (even Nintendo's SA-1 does that and more), at that point in the game, because otherwise it works fine :/

Both? I downloaded a hacked PAL version that takes away the lockout though, so I'm set with that.

As for Bare Knuckle 3, the translation patch also allows it to be played on a Genesis, so that's good.

edit: I also forgot to mention... I was thinking about including "boxes" with my repros. I feel actual boxes would be too costly, so I was thinking about creating the artwork for the universal game cases.

Well, the Gen Mobile does have an NTSC / PAL switch, but I never use it.
It seems to have no effect, and I am guessing that the software emulation
side or whatever kicks in an auto-detects and sets the required region, and
then the PAL edition of Mega Man: The Wily Wars. I said both, as it was
released in Japan as Rockman Mega World. I think the JPN version is the
one without the region lock, as is wasn't required because of the notch
in the cart.

That is good. I will likely purchase one of these someday, as you can not use the real Sonic & Knuckles cart with the Gen Mobile (its either a missing pin or too low voltage problem). I had no idea that this game was ever released separately.

I agree, more costly or not, I would actually appreciate the universal game case artwork over the other option.
I need to actually start purchasing these cases when I get the money, I need a truck load lol

I really like the box idea! Universal cases with custom art sounds like a great idea to me.

If you end up doing the Genesis games I'll definitely jump on a Mega Man: Wily Wars copy.

Sweet that you got the new SNES method working. Also, if you do decide to take the plunge into doing GBA repros I would be happy to pay whatever extra you want to get Mother 3 repro'd.

Also, here's a forum I found for Master System and Game Gear enthusiasts: http://www.smspower.org/ Maybe you can use that to figure out how to do Game Gear repros. I'd love to have Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflit repro'd.

Streets of Rage III and Golden Axe III are available on the PS3 Genesis compilation though. Since they're commercialy available for $20 on that comp, which I'm assuming is going to be a lot cheaper than Zig could make both, those shouldn't be considered for repros IMHO.

While this is true, there are some of us, myself included, that would never touch a PS3 with a ten foot pole lol

No offense intended, as you prove a valid point. But a lot of collectors and game enthusiasts have no problem paying a premium to be able to play certain games on the original hardware; even if an anthology or compilation exists for a newer console, it's never the same for us. Heck, we could all buy Dingoos an ROM ourselves to death lol
I own one, but I like collecting and playing carts as well.
