Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Re: Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I always though the storytelling was MUCH better in the Black Ops trilogy. Modern Warfare's writing was just lazy; the narrative had very little context for the setting, there were few characters I ever gave a shit about, and the overarching plot felt really generic. Black Ops, while I agree that the first one wasn't as good as it could have been, used the format of a frame story brilliantly, and the Black Ops III is the absolute pinnacle of Call of Duty single player campaigns in my opinion with gorgeous visuals, rock solid writing, and incredible voice cast with superb performances, and direction that brought the whole game together in an exceptional package.

This is definitely true for MW2. Playing it last night I had very little idea what was going on, who I was, or why I was shooting anyone I was shooting. The game's idea of framing the plot, is to show a bunch of random military topography maps, while some gruff voiced general says random things that mean nothing without proper context. Context which I wasn't provided best I could tell.

I actually enjoyed MW2 the most of the three, but it's also definitely the weakest in terms of writing and direction. My biggest gripe, honestly, comes from the beginning of the first game - at no point do they ever tell you WHAT Middle Eastern country you're fighting in. That's just lazy writing; give me a damn setting and backstory. For all of Ghosts' flaws - and there were many - it told you exactly who the Federation was and why you were fighting them.

I'm going to be a little biased since Ghosts and MW3 are fresh in my mind and I haven't played MW2's campaign since it launched a decade ago or something, but I'm pretty sure MW2 is my least favorite by a big chunk. I even remember a lot more of CoD4' campaign than it. All that really comes to mind with MW2 to me is... lots of on rail shooter segments, the airport massacre, some gas stations, and the shortest campaign ever even for this series' standards. Ghosts and MW3 are a lot better.
I can see how Black Ops might be doing a better job at telling a story, but so far I hate all the characters. The dudes yelling during that prison escape was probably supposed to be enduring or something, but it just annoyed the heck out of me.

Made it to [ACT12] Contingency in CoD:MW2 tonight, so I'm 2/3rds the way through apparently. This CoD is like a 7/10 at best for me guys. It would help if I was at all invested in the plot, but alas, I am not. I only have a vague idea of what's going on. I do appreciate some of the more unique locales though. Fighting Russians in Virginia was different.

You may have already shared this (In which case, a link to the right direction would suffice), but which other CoD campaigns have you played, and which were your favorites? I've had an urge to sit down with some 4-6 hour single player fps stuff recently, and always heard good things about CoD, despite its multiplayer reputation.

The best console FPS I can recommend for 4-6 hours campaign is this:
That is one kick ass FPS folks.
As for your CoD question, these are what I've beaten / rate / think:
Call of Duty (PC) | 8.5/10 | The OG that started it all is great, visceral, and remains the hardest CoD.
Call of Duty 2 (PC) | 8/10 | Quality FPS, but treads a lot of the same water as its predecessor, a little redundant.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (DS) | 7.5/10 | Solid FPS for DS, there's lots of CoD DS entries, they're the best FPS games on the system.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (360) | 9/10 | Pretty damned awesome scenarios and plot, I loved it. Lived up to the hype.
Call of Duty: Black Ops (360) | 6/10 | Eh... tries to be grimdark and edgy, shoddy plot and overly linear mission design, wasn't great.
If I were going to recommend a top 5 FPS games I've beaten:
Soldier of Fortune (Platinum Edition) (PC) ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_o ... video_game) )
-My favorite FPS of all time. Vicious action, gory as hell, and a tough challenge all the way through. If you love FPS and you haven't played through Soldier of Fortune yet, you don't really love FPS sucka. STAY AWAY FROM THE SEQUELS
Half-Life (PC)
-I like it better than Half-Life 2, and I didn't even mind Xen. No really!
Black (Xbox) ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_(video_game) )
-I mentioned it above, but Black is like starring in your own cocaine-addled 80s Rambo action flick. Amazing. I wish it'd gotten a PC port, more people need to play this.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (PC) ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.T.A.L.K ... _Chernobyl )
-This is almost an RPG as much an FPS, let's just call it a survival FPS. Haunting, darkly beautiful, and incredibly unique for its time, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. came out of nowhere and reinvented FPS horror.
Gunman Chronicles (PC) ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunman_Chronicles )
-Well this is one of the most underrated FPS ever. Space cowboys, dinosaurs, aliens, and sexy android ladies to name just a couple reasons why this schlocky-but-great shooter was ignored. It's just a fun b-movie of a game to blast through, and you can design your own weapons!

I'm pleasantly surprised by all the COD talk lately. I'm thinking I might tackle Ghosts after I finish up my current XCOM 2: WOTC campaign.

Ghosts is decent, but its writing is pretty good. Definitely the game's strongest point.

Ghosts is one I've been meaning to play since it came out. And I found a copy at a yard sale for a buck over the summer, so I'm good to go.
