Funny enough, the guy who played Dale, the Coast Guard officer? I was 2nd AD on a pilot he and his wife filmed a couple of years back. I had no idea he was in this, so when he popped up, I was pleasantly surprised. Super cool guy, really easy to work with. I'm glad he's doing well.Raging Justice wrote:The Menu

Absolutely. I loved the movie too. A great one, but unfortunately it does fall on my list of movies I don't want to spoil for folks!

One my favorite 90's low budget zombie movies is Bio Zombie (1998). It's from Hong Kong, but there's a great English dub. The English dub is really well-done for what the movie is - obviously everyone is in on the spoof. It has a VCD shop that the main characters run, a Gameboy Color with a Gameboy Camera prominent throughout, Sega Saturn featured, and it's a spoof of House of the Dead, with mockups of the "reload" screen, and has the actors on rotating pedestals when the action gets into it to introduce the player characters with their chosen weapons.
It recently got released on Blu-ray. If I didn't just find out about the HD release, I was going to link my own MP4 remix of the various crap previous releases so you guys could stream it through your browser.
If you watch it, you should know that the director plays "Sushi Boy" and really gave an awesome performance.

You know searching for this movie led me down a rabbit hole full of lots of other fun looking low budget horror and action movies LOL. The Mermaid (2016)
I remember discovering Stephen Chow through Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. I enjoyed both movies, some of his later works didn't do it for me though. I don't know if my tastes simply changed or if his abilities as a film maker eroded after Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. I didn't like Journey to the West. I wasn't into CJ7, and now I can add The Mermaid to the list of Chow movies I don't like
There's a lot of awful CGI in this movie and much of the humor falls flat, though I get the feeling that some of that could be a result of certain jokes just not translating very well to a Westerner like myself (or the people who subtitled this thing just doing a poor job with the translation). Like there's a scene with guys rolling on the floor that seemed to be a gag, but I didn't get it. I felt like something was lost in the translation. The bad CGI is typical of Chow, and I wouldn't mind if it added to the humor that the movie is going for, but it really doesn't.
The story is a fairly generic one about preserving the environment and a guy who falls in love with a mermaid. It's sort of like James Cameron's Avatar honestly.
With Chow movies, I want crazy over the top action and lots of comedy (like Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer), The Mermaid doesn't really deliver in either category though. I will say though that there is a scene in this movie involving the male protagonist and two cops that is legitimately hilarious. It's a shame that most of the other comedy bits just don't work as well. That was the only scene that actually got me laughing and I actually re-watched it immediately after it was over. This scene is comedy gold:
That's really the only part of the movie you need to see. If more scenes were this funny I would have enjoyed the movie more. I kind of wish Chow would stick to doing martial arts themed movies, they seen to work better for him. Even Shaolin Soccer had a strong kung fu element to it, despite being a soccer movie.

Barbarella
This may be one of the stupidest movies ever made...and yet I was entertained. To me, NOTHING about this movie should be taken seriously. It's the perfect movie to watch with some drunk buddies or maybe some friends high on something. It has plenty of psychadelic visuals. Plus, there are so many things in this movie that seem to be unintentionally funny...or maybe they are intentional. Like I said, it just doesn't feel like a movie to be taken seriously on any level. It's silly, goofy, weird, awkward, cheesy, and downright ridiculous, and I swear at least 50% of this movie is about sex both literally and figuratively.
It's impossible to talk about this movie without mentioning how sexy Jane Fonda was. She's just...wow
If at any point during the movie your mind isn't in the gutter, the next scene will probably have her doing something that puts it right back there. In fact, I feel like she spent about half of the movie in various states of undress. It's amazing how wholesome her character seems to be despite the movie objectifying her and having her get laid at every opportunity. Her "pureness" even becomes a plot point, and it's just as ridiculous as everything else in the film. This is a trashy movie, but that's part of the fun. I liked this. It's a funny sci fi movie with an interesting story that touches on some real life conspiracy theories. I suppose you could call it a blaxploitation film, but I don't consider myself an expert on what makes a movie quality for that category. I actually think elements of this movie make for some interesting sociopolitical commentary. As someone who isn't black I think it would be interesting to see reactions to the movie from people who are as the movie does touch on some racial issues. There's a lot of silliness in the movie, but some parts of it are actually a bit thought provoking. I think this movie is smarter than it appears to be and there's interesting stuff in it worth discussing when you dig deeper into it. This is one of those movies I think I will watch again. You can enjoy this movie as just a sci fi movie, or as just a comedy, but there is some depth to it as well
I have to say, and this applies to a lot of movies I've watched recently, DON'T WATCH THE TRAILER. Every time I see a new movie and then go see the trailer on youtube, I'm amazed at how much they give away. Trailers are a necessary evil for drawing in an audience, but in my opinion serious film buffs should avoid them whenever possible. I honestly think if makes for a better viewing experience as every little thing that happens in a movie is a surprise to me. I find that the plot for a lot of movies engages me more when I know literally nothing about what is going to happen at all.
Sometimes trailers also misrepresent a film too. In the past, I avoided some films due to a bad trailer only to discover later that the movie is actually awesome. So I try to mostly avoid trailers now, at least for movies anyway (I still watch some video game/TV series trailers). These days I will often rely on internet places like this or youtubers I trust to decide whether or not to check out a movie, instead of relying on trailers.
