Sound of Freedom is getting a lot of attention. I'm gonna try and check it out. Seems like that and Mission Impossible are the must see movies right now and I've already seen Mission Impossible.

Oh wait, I forgot Oppenheimer...need to see that too. How could I forget a Nolan movie? So that and Sound of Freedom are on the to do list (Sound of Freedom is supposedly a very powerful movie that people need to see)

I started watching a movie from last year called See How They Run. I unfortunately had to attend to some things and didn't get to finish it, but I was finding it to be a fun, whimsical, movie. It seems to be a British, murder mystery, bringing to mind stuff like Clue. Also, it does this neat thing where the screen gets split in two right down the middle, and the left and right half of the screen show you the same scene playing out but from different perspectives.

I'd argue Barbie is a must see for cinema lovers too. There is a lot of brilliance going on in that film, from production design to set dec to wardrobe, construction, satire, choreography...it excels on many levels.

Everything I’ve read and seen suggests Sound of Freedom is pretty mediocre all around. I suspect it’s the political storm around it that’s buoying it. Despite the fact that the political messaging is more around the film than in it.

Everything I've heard about the Barbie movie sounds awful honestly. I'm also not a big Margot Robbie fan. She's a mediocre actress and I also don't know why people seem to think she's gorgeous.

I really like Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell though, and I've heard that their performances are really the only good things the Barbie movie has going for it. I'm going to respectfully pass on seeing this...though I may at some point check out some of Gosling and Ferrell's scenes if they ever get put up on youtube. Even the people who hate this movie seem to have nothing but praise for what Gosling does with the material.

The people who told you that are wrong. Barbie is a triumph in many areas, not only in performances but also construction and set dec, propmaking, hair and makeup, etc. The crew on this went to such lengths as to measure dimensions of the toys and playsets and then construct them based around Margot Robbie's height. All of the major props and wardrobe for toy characters are also slavishly based on the actual toy line, from the shoes to the vehicles to the refrigerator. Speaking as a guy who crews on movies and TV, what the below the line folks did is incredible and deserves to be acknowledged.

And Gosling is incredible.

Honestly, Margot Robbie was incredible as well. She really feels great for the role, and I suspect she’s a much better actress than I’ve previously given her credit for.

There are absolutely flaws in the movie, but on the whole, most negative criticism of the movie has been political and not related to the quality of the film itself.

I thought she did well in Wolf of Wall Street. It was also a well established character where you see something deeper with her despite the flawed narrative of the lead actor.

Also who cares if you don't think she's gorgeous? Are you going into the Barbie movie expecting to cum?

I wasn't planning on it, but it'd be a nice bonus.

The set design and such of Barbie looks fantastic, but I feel like I get the gist from the trailers, and I'm really not enthused about the real world Will Ferrell scenes. Still, when I went to see Mission: Impossible at 10pm last Tuesday there were all kinds of people dressed in pink taking pictures in front of the posters, and it was nice to see people having fun like that with a movie even if don't think it's for me.

I was hoping to see Oppenheimer in 70mm Imax because I live near one of the few real Imax theaters in the world that can play 70mm, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. All the screenings for the next two weeks are packed, including weekday night shows starting at 11pm. Insane. Don't these people have jobs? Loved ones who care about them? I should be the only one in the theater at that time of night. Honestly!

Barbie

So I changed my mind and saw Barbie, just on account on how divisive and all over the place opinions on it have been. With so many people loving it and so many people hating it, I kind of wanted to see it for myself and have my own take on it.

The movie has a lot of fun, silly, and funny moments, most of which coming from Will Ferrell, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Michael Cera. The first half of the movie is mostly a good time. It also does a lot of interesting things visually (kind of like Speed Racer). The back and forth trips to and from Barbieland and the real world are a treat to watch and one could probably go on and on about the sets and costume designs. Unfortunately, what would otherwise be a fun movie often gets dragged down by obnoxious, heavy handed, "messaging", particularly in the second half of the movie - including a very whiny, ranty scene featuring a certain character. I'm trying to mince words as to not offend as the Barbie movie touches on subjects that absolutely WILL offend some people, and I've seen enough negative reactions online to know that to be true. Like I said, divisive movie.

Also, the movie is too short and features a very strange and unsatisfying ending (particularly for the Kens)

The best parts of the movie are the Kens (especially Ryan Gosling and to a lesser extent Simu Liu) Alan, and the CEO played by Will Ferrell. All of the best and most fun scenes feature them.

Alan may be the most interesting character in terms of story potential given that he's not a Ken or a Barbie and so much of the movie revolves around them. Yet, he isn't really given an interesting story arc with a satisfying resolution. I thought he was the character with the most potential given that he's the only real, unique individual in a fantasy world populated by Kens and Barbies. He gets a pretty hilarious fight scene, but does little of note beyond that. They could have done a very interesting story about how you don't have to be a Ken OR a Barbie...but sadly that was not the case.

Gosling steals the show in this movie and frankly, the movie should have been "Ken" instead of "Barbie". He has more charm than anyone in this movie and feels like the "real" protagonist of the story. His rivalry with Simu Liu "Ken" is fun and so is his big dance number. His arc is pretty good too, though it's sad that his ultimate epiphany of realizing that he doesn't need Barbie to be someone of value is one that he only has when SHE BASICALLY TELLS HIM THAT. It's like Ken is incapable of doing anything without Barbie, including realizing that he doesn't need her ironically. It's a good arc that they fumble in the end. Barbie's story in this is far less interesting than Ken's (with Barbie also being played by someone with far less acting talent than Gosling). Ken should have his own spinoff...and bring Alan along with him. Ken is definitely "kenough" to have his own movie.

All of the worst scenes revolve around the female characters, most notably Margot Robbie who is the least interesting character in her own movie. Sasha, the kid in this movie, is just annoying in literally every single scene that she's in. Gloria is a pretty loveable character in the first half of the movie then gets whiny and obnoxious later in the film

Barbie seems to want to be this strong, feminist, movie...yet undercuts that in so many ways, but again, that is getting into controversial territory so I'll just leave that alone.

Also, the plot has holes in it. We're told that how people play with Barbie and Ken dolls affects them in the fantasy world, yet this only seems to apply when the plot deems it convenient.

Overall, the movie is a dud to me. However, I've seen people recommend other, similar stuff that is supposedly much better like Life-Size, Toy Story 3 (which apparently features a story involving Ken and Barbie), the Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse series, and Enchanted. I've already seen Enchanted before and loved it, but I might check out some of this other stuff too.

Now that I think about it, even the Lego Movie is similar in some ways to this film...but far more entertaining and better written.

Well frankly, there's a gag in the movie about how she (Margot not Barbie) is this perfect, gorgeous woman, which seems to be how many people view her. So I think I'm well within my rights to comment on her looks.
