Rewatched the original Friday the 13th last night. I went with the Unrated cut from the Shout! Factory box set. It's still fun as hell!

I just wish I could show it to my nieces.

It's February! The short month! Which means it's time to watch a lot of shorts.

Quiet Room Bears

Image

A guy arrives at home to spend a few days doing some light home-repairs before the rest of his family show up. But unbeknownst to him, he's been targeted by a malicious supernatural being who manipulates his targets into mutilating themselves, all so they can create Quiet Room Bears: grotesque, malformed Teddy's made with other toy pieces and human body parts.

Yes, I watched a movie about creepy, demonic teddy bears. And yes, it was surprisingly enjoyable. The effects are pretty low budget, but it looks good for what it is, and the variety of creepy teddy bears on display is quite disturbing. Apparently the director makes these things for a living. Interesting hobby. Anyway, it's actually a very solid outing, the kind of thing I actually wish was at least a little longer, because it's got a lot of good ideas in it. Enough that I think it would make nice full-feature thriller if it got fleshed out a bit.

I've seen that ages ago. Liked it, but remember very little. Perhaps it's due for a rewatch?

Primer...I like how the movie kept you interested and was dong something different but not right out wacko weird.
I heard the movie production cost was only $7000 yet to me it was still very professionally done I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the major Hollywood movies which makes me believe Hollywood still over pays a LOT for movies. Usually low budget movies you can tell on the first camera shot.

Major spoiler do not click:-
I feel sorry for myself after finishing the movie, and although I had near no idea what was going on, the least of it is I had no idea there was time traveling happening.
I thought the machines is creating doubles and somehow there is a way to make a profit out of stock market using this method.

I like a smart movie plot so long as all the information is there for you to figure out but this one had people claiming seeing it few times and still not understanding everything. Even the explaination videos had to assume and figure out thing on their own to be able to tell whats going on.

I do not fully agree, but respect for the director for refusing to dumb it down to make it more "commercial"

The Fate of the Furious (2017)

The script for this film was definitely written in pencil, in a spiral-bound notebook, during study hall.
Possibly by the kid from Rubber Grenade (Your Source for Entertainment).

This movie made me think of Speed Racer and the Fast and Furious franchise. I've noticed some Jackie Chan fans love to point out that it predates the F & F movies. There's a really cool street race early in the movie that I enjoyed a lot, probably the best race in the movie. There are some fights too, I mean it's a Jackie Chan movie after all. The martial arts choreography in this one is crazy. Jackie moves and fights almost like he's Spider-Man. There's a slightly over the top, almost comic book like vibe to the fights in this one with Jackie doing some of the fanciest, most athletic stuff I've seen in his movies. If you can't be bothered with the race car stuff, at least check out the fight scene in the Pachinko place, it's insane.

Image

There's a leading lady in this film too. She can be a bit annoying and a bit dumb, but she's also sweet, sincere, well meaning, and cute. I really enjoyed her role in this movie. A good example of a flawed, but still lovable character.

Interesting note about this one, it's pretty bloody and violent compared to some of Jackie's other movies. Also, there's no comedy, at least not from Jackie himself. He's more like your typical, badass, action hero in this movie. He's not his usual goofball self. He's very broody and kind of angry at times. He pulls it off though. Him being so serious kind of plays into the plot a little bit too, with one character asking him if he ever smiles, which is such a hilarious thing to see someone ask Jackie Chan of all people.

Image

The movie's a bit of a hodgepodge of action. You have the races, the martial arts, and a pretty crazy, bloody, violent, shoot out sequence at one point that feels like you've shifted into a John Woo movie or something. What's funny too is two guys who are NOT Jackie Chan kind of stand out as the action heroes in this scene. It's almost like you changed the channel to another movie with different stars. I kind of dug it though.

Stunt wise, there's a crazy scene involving a construction vehicle that I won't spoil. It's pretty crazy. It goes on slightly too long though and starts to feel a bit too over the top before it's over.

Now, this movie seems to get a mixed reaction from what I've seen. Some people love it. Some people think it's one of Jackie's weakest movies. It may have suffered a bit too from being released in the same year as Rumble in the Bronx, which a lot of people love. I really enjoyed it, but it has some flaws. There's an overuse of slow motion at times that makes the movie feel more like a Western production than a Hong Kong action movie. It's kind of annoying. It's like they use it to enhance the drama in some places or to make fights feel more epic, but I found it distracting and a bit off putting. Also, Jackie was apparently hurt while filming Rumble in the Bronx, so this is one of those rare instances where he has to use a stunt double. You'll probably notice those moments if you're really paying attention, but I didn't, and only found out AFTER watching the movie. Also, while this is a movie based around driving, with the exception of the cool street race I mentioned earlier, there's arguably better driving based scenes in some of his other movies like Armour of God 1 and 2.

So yeah, pretty cool movie IMO. Maybe not one of Jackie's best, but I can't say I didn't have a good time watching it. Honestly, at this point I feel like even the weaker films in Jackie's catalog still have something worthwhile to offer. There's always a few scenes that stick with you, sometimes characters too. I love Amy from this movie for example, and the fight scenes, the shoot out, the one street race, and that crazy construction vehicle scene are pretty awesome too. If this is one of Jackie's "weaker" films, it still puts many others to shame

The last movie I watched the past weekend was Limbo! It's a 2021 Hong Kong action/thriller movie, directed by Cheang Pou-soi. The movie is about two cops that are partners, one is a hot head who is looking for revenge and the other is more level headed. They're working on a homicide case, investigating a string of murders, which they suspect was committed by a serial killer, due to the similarities in the cases. A lot of drama unfolds during their investigation, but I don't want to give away too much of the plot.

If you're a fan of Hong Kong action movies or crime thrillers, I recommend this one! However, there's some pretty graphic scenes here, so definitely don't recommend watching with the family.

Short #2:

Piercing Stillness

Image

A man with a video camera goes for a walk in a field and comes across a small wooden artist mannequin. Strangeness ensues.

This is an Italian short film from 2019. It's also clearly an art film that clocks in at less than 5 minutes, meaning that it'll probably be quicker for you to just go and watch it, rather than you sit there and read a blurp by me trying to explain what's going on and what it all might mean. There's paper butterflies, a man in a black hat, and stone chimeras. Don't ask what's going on. Just roll with it. It's an art film. I don't know what it all means. Some of the symbolism is easy to decipher, but a lot of it isn't, so it's kind of up to the viewer to draw their own conclusions. If that kind of stuff isn't your jam, then you can skip it. But if you're curious and have a few minutes to kill, then at the very least it's an interesting little film that's very pretty to look at.
