Re: Movies Talk! Talkin' about movies!
Just found out that the masterpiece Ivansxtc came out on bluray a few months ago by the amazing distributor Arrow. I've seen it a few years ago in a pretty bad condition (early dvd rip with a film using digital cameras when they were new), but the bluray makes it look a million times better.
Looks like no one knows this movie and it blows my mind. It's a modern retelling of a Tolstoy novella about a hedonistic as hell guy getting cancer, and eventually having an existential crisis as he comes to terms with it. Danny Huston (John Huston's son) gives one of my all time favourite performances in this.

I recently discovered that Hannibal Lector first appearance was not in Silence of the Lambs...I am in shock.

Dang really lol? I'm not sure if I've seen hannibal but I liked red dragon. I'm wondering if the TV series Clarice is any good. Previews look decent.

Is it Michael Mann's Manhunter? It is a neo-noir masterpiece. Michael Mann is honestly one of my favourite directors.

i haven't seen that one. Red Dragons the remake correct? i just never cared for that CSI guys acting to watch manhunter, but i am interested in it.
Re: Movies Talk! Talkin' about movies!
It's less a remake of Manhunter and more a second film adaptation of the Red Dragon novel, but the book was the first appearance of the character either way.
Re: Movies Talk! Talkin' about movies!
The book is fantastic, if y'all haven't read it. But yeah, I figure RCB must be talking about Manhunter. It's an awesome film with some fantastic choices in color, performance, and set design. I infinitely prefer it to Red Dragon. Also, Brian Cox is Hannibal Lecter. I'd argue the contrast he provides to Anthony Hopkins is worth seeing the film for, but the whole film is worth seeing the film for.

Yea Brain Cox did a wonderful job in it. The police procedural stuff is your standard noir stuff, but I didn't mind it. But yea, the colours of it are just fantastic.

Yes Manhunter. I don't like noir or films that have a lot of talking because they are slow and have a lot of dialogue which seems filler to me then they slip the details of the story between the dialogue which I keep missing and they never mention it again. Subtitles are a must. I am not sure if its a language barrier or I am just not smart enough. Do you find yourselves going back to read to synopsis what was going on?
On the good side, this one was not dead slow you just had to wait for the build up. I guess movies like these have an approach to mirror reality over the comic stuff like Fast and Furious which is a real life fantasy.
I saw Red Dragon near 20 years ago, I am completely blank other than the fact that Hannibal was played by a different character than Hopkins. Am I wrong to think Red Dragon is about the only
EDIT: Seems like Hopkins was playing Hannibal. My memory failed with somewhere else where the character was played by someone else. Am I wrong to think that Red Dragon seems the only second adaptation of a classic film? My understanding is Manhunter is a classic, they usually do not remake/readapt those unless the use of modern tech. improves it greatly like superhero films I guess.
@Ack
I think for the first time I see a main/interesting character showing up as a cameo in a film which is an interesting approach. What you mean fantastic choice in colours? I didn't notice it.

Manhunter's excellent, but it was a flop in terms of box office. It got remade because Hannibal was very successful financially, but it would have been hard to make a sequel to it, considering the whole thing was fairly absurd. Manhunter was fairly little known, so they took another pass at Red Dragon and beefed up Lecter's role from the original adaptation. It worked. Financially, at least.
