In a lot of ways this is great, but I do worry we're on the cusp of an indie bubble.

People aren't making indie games because they are massively profitable, you know. Its like saying theres an indie film bubble or a diy punk bubble, it kinda doesn't make any sense. Indie stuff has exploded because game development is more accessible than ever and more people are trying it. That's it tbh.

The indie stuff you find on console eshops and steam is honestly only a tiny fraction of how much experimental and indie content is out there. Its massive.

Right, of course, but I want it to remain present on Steam and GOG and Switch and PSN because I want it not just to get made and exist but to be available.

I don't really see the avenues going away, though it seems there has been a bit of a rolling back in some ways (Nintendo said they aren't going to open the floodgates quite as wide on the Switch as they did on the Wii U, and Steam just got rid of Greenlight in favor of a new program) but on the other hand, switch devkits are EXTREMELY affordable compared to the Wii U's, and frankly I think we are only going to see more high profile indie games in the future, not less.

also apologies if I'm coming across as like, cold or anything. I kinda have some involvement in the indie/altgames scene these days so it's kinda something i'm protective of  .

AQ, you keep doing what you do. I'm sure we'd all love to see you find success in indie games.

I swear, they are legitimately trying to have the worst, most customer-confusing names possible. As if Xbox One weren't an awkward enough name for a successor console (it even rivals Wii U and NEW 3DS for pete's sake), the XBox One X that abbreviates back to just XBOX is just beyond stupid.

Don't forget they're also releasing the Xbox One S.

People can make fun all day of Sony and their console names but at least they're easy on the general consumer.

All their standard global level released stuff has kept a consistent theme. Playstation 1-4 and Playstation Portable, even the Playstation Go, Playstation Vita, or that Japanese oddity that Playstation X unit.

Nintendo was fairly well too until they dropped the Nintendo name off the console for the Wii and far more stupid WiiU, but now it's back with Nintendo Switch. Until that asinine 'New' tacked onto the 3DS model with the beefier parts they had a consistent going on that too as they all said Nintendo on there, then the subname of the hardware family Gameboy, Color, Advance, then the flavors of Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS/2DS. It was clear, consistent, and memorable.

Even the new Steam system isn't prohibitive. Devs just have to put up some cash. It will be mostly biz as usual yeah.
