1) I think it was supposed to be pronounced as "centr". Yeah I know the English language has the stupid habit of having letters in words you are not supposed to read. live with it.

2) Their language their rules :P.

but really try arguing with them about how you are supposed to call the sidewalk (pavement). That's like calling the chair wood. imo.

Now, I can understand why you Brits argue for colour over color and the related words. But how can you honestly say that it's spelled Centre instead of Center? Colour is based around the fact that the first syllable has a different vowel sound than the second. I don't think you pronounce it "Cen-tree" or "Cen-tre", so why not spell it the way it sounds, namely Center? Hell, you pronounce schedule the way it's spelled. I just want some consistency from you Brits if you're going to change the spelling of colour.
Who said English follows rules? The OU in Couch, You and Thought is pronounced differently in each word, so its not like it matters.

Also words like kettle, brittle etc arent pronounced the way they're written either, and as far as i know, you Americans don't spell them as Kettel and Brittel, so actually, it seems to me that our spelling is more in keeping with the rules of English.

Boom. Headshot.

Technically English has routes within not only Latin, but German and French. It just so happens centre, is a French word, just like metre etc. It's you lot that has butchered the English language. In French you pronounce it sauntre with a downward inflection on the 're' part without pronouncing the e. You very rarely pronounce the last letter in French, hence the 'r' being the most important part of the last syllable is before the 'e', the 'e' does not need to be pronounced, hence why it's on the end.

More like made it better by getting rid of as much of the French influences as possible.

Have we gotten rid of all the silly crap yet? No, but that's because we have a lot of work ahead of us thanks to how badly the English language was screwed up to begin with.

Seriously, worst language ever, with the possible exception of French. Oh, you don't pronounce the last letter? THEN DON'T FRIGGIN' PUT IT THERE! C'mon, damn.

.

I have to totally disagree with you there. Removing from a language is never a good thing. It might be harder, but a rich language is always a sign of higher culture.

I know it might be easier to spell color instead of colour. Or Favorite instead of Favourite, but that's just it. You must train your brain. The richer version of these words makes you think more.

I think Esperanto is the worst language ever, myself.

I'm sorry, I find this stupid as hell.

I believe a language should be friendly, not esoteric.

Language is nothing more than a means of communicating. If you regularly have to correct a person for the way they use it, simply because they weren't taught that "Pheonix" is actually spelled "Phoenix", even though you don't actually pronounce it "Foe-Nicks", then the language has failed.

so in your opinion we don't need beautiful because we already have pretty and that is much easier to spell and write? Oh and poetry is a waste of time, because words are just a way of communicating. come to think of it lets stop using the word smile and instead use these :D

Well, I can see one use you've found for your words is putting them in my mouth. Do they have straw-men where you come from?

In essence, you are saying aesthetics are greater than and more important than basic functionality. All I'm saying is: That's fucking stupid. No amount of pretty words are going to keep the language from being confusing as hell.

The richness of a language is not enhanced by confusing spelling. You still get the full range of puns and other linguistic constructs. We just have been simplifying all those nasty French influences.
