If the Ars Technica take on Godzilla vs. Kong is any indication, some of these crap blockbuster films might finally be remembering to embrace that crap blockbuster nature instead of pretending they are anything more.

I fully embrace the blockbuster crap. Not every movie I see needs to have a deep or gripping narrative. I mean, sure. Sometimes I want a good story, but sometimes I just want to see pretty visuals and have things go *BOOM*. Nothing is wrong with either. What irks me is when people expect both, or the movie doesn’t know which one it wants to be. For example, people complained a lot about the last Godzilla movie. Said it was too long and the human characters were boring. And while I agree with the first point (seriously, that thing need to be at least 20 minutes shorter), for the second I was like "So what?" It’s a Godzilla movie. I'm not watching it for the human story, I'm watching it because I want it to look good and to see a giant radioactive lizard fight other Kaiju and wreaks shit. Does it do that? Yes? Sweet, I'm sold. Everything else after that is secondary. Bring on the popcorn.

Most of the time when watching a movie I just want to relax and turn off the brain. I usually just fall asleep anyway. I like a deep movie every now and then but usually catch it by mistake.

And I enjoy crap. Like the kind of crap where someone took a dumpster and lit the contents on fire...and then someone else came along and said that was too expensive, so they recreate it with a single cardboard box.

Which reminds me, I need to get Fastbilly to track down a copy of House 3 for me.

Yeah, Ack and I are quite familiar with crap....

The Boogey Man



After the soul of a very creepy dude who was trapped in a mirror for several years is freed, he goes on a murder spree to punish those responsible for trapping him in the first place (as well as anyone else who happens to cross his path.)

I swear this is one of the slowest slashers I've ever watched. The killer doesn't even show back up until the movie is half way over. And then once he's there they make it worse by dragging out the murderin' to an obnoxious degree. There is a fine line between tension and boredom, and the filmmakers seem to have found that line and purposefully jumped over onto the boredom side. The film also has a bad habit of not explaining things. Like, I really like all the included folklore related to mirrors, but the film doesn't bother explaining any of that to the viewer, it just expects you to already know it. So if you don’t, you're going to be a bit confused. So basically it's an interesting slasher with some neat ideas, but it’s bogged down with strange story oddities, pacing issues and the usual suspects when considering the film is distinctly low-budget.

Been meaning to watch that one myself for years...

Indies have time to shine, but the movies that drive good movies....thing of the past for years to come.

In terms of theaters, sure, but we've been headed towards that for a long time. I know a couple years ago Disney came to believe there wasn't much point in making any more 25 million dollar budgeted movies targeted to adults because people just weren't showing up for them. However, they thought streaming offered an opportunity for those types of films to find an audience.

And now Disney's had huge success with Disney+ but if they really want to take on Netflix, I imagine they'll have to revamp Hulu and give it a kick in the ass with lots of new content tailored for adults. If they can get people to watch those types of films again, other services will follow suit.

It does make sense though. Even before we had a world of content on demand via streaming, not everything prompted that "see on the big screen" mentality. Or perhaps some of those projects get developed into series instead, since those also work to attract/retain subscribers.
