That looks like a receipt you get when you check something out. Although I know you can purchase an item if you admit you lost it. Also, my library will sell off books and movies that are no longer needed. Very cheap, too.

This is a thing some public libraries have started doing to help advertise their value to the community. When you borrow something they put the replacement cost totals at the bottom of the receipt so you can better understand what the library is doing for you. And yes, a lot of public libraries do offer game lending. My local doesn't, but some in the extended network do. Libraries have, in some ways, replaced game rentals for people who don't just troll the eshop sales.

Heh. My son is on a Big Nate kick.

Splatoon does have a manga. Given that the receipt has several Splatoon entries, I am betting that you're seeing somebody checking out several volumes of it. Our local library has at least some of it.

Can confirm. My kids check out the Splatoon manga all the time.

Yeah, our library used to have our receipts do that, but I believe we eventually took it off because it was confusing people.

Almost all the libraries in my area circulate video games, so at this point you can borrow just about anything that received a physical release. I do all of the purchasing of games for my library, and since we're pretty well funded most years, we have multiple copies of major releases and copies of most of the more niche titles as well.

Our Friends group also has a book sale to raise money for the library, and they accept donated media, including video games. I tell you, nothing beats buying a rare Gamecube game for $1 and knowing that $1 also goes towards funding my own employment :D

It's amazing how bad dubbing affects your perception of a character.

I was playing through one of the prologues of Octopath Traveler 2 and thinking, "this character is annoying". On a whim, I switched over to Japanese. I had been playing the game dubbed up to this point. Wow. My perception of her character changed dramatically. I realized the English dub is what was making me dislike her. Also, I noticed that some of the stuff in the game's dialog boxes are not spoken by the Japanese voice cast. In other words, the English translation actually has characters talking too much and it makes some moments less effective.

I did a little quick googling and saw that a lot of people don't like the dubbing in the Octopath series. I think I'll stick with Japanese now. I think the female characters got affected the most by the bad dubbing in OT 2. I was finding myself struggling to enjoy their prologues. I don't typically like playing Japanese games in English, but I hate missing out on battle banter since that stuff isn't subtitled so I tried playing OT 2 in English, but the dub hurts the game a lot.

Reminds me that even the best story or script in the world, falls apart without good actors.

I started playing Star Ocean First Departure R and jesus frucking Christ I feel like I've just sat through like three fucking hours of dialog and cutscenes. CAN I PLEASE GO FIGHT SOME MONSTERS OR KILL A FUCKING BOSS ALREADY!!!
this is a big reason why I loathe JRPG. I never understood people who like them. Long boring dialogues, huge library of items causes headache reading all the specs, fighting by making choice via digging in a menu. I just don't get it. Then again, the japanese have a unique tastes. I must say that game looks good, great utilization of modern technology for the genre.

I can't speak for others, but there are several things I enjoy about JRPGs

1. They are comparatively easy. If I can't get past a section, I can just grind a bit and come back stronger. This means I am unlikely to just hit a wall and be unable to progress like might happen in a difficult game with limited continues.
This has become less of an issue with modern games, but was a big deal when games were frequently "Nintendo Hard".

2. Exploration. I enjoy exploring a world, seeing maps and continents and navigating. This mostly means adventure games and RPGs.

3. I tend to enjoy the stories. Particularly back in the eighties and nineties, these were the games with the deepest stories available.

4. Clear sense of progress. Grinding and getting stronger can be fun, and when you see stat increases it's easy to see how you have progressed. This gives a dopamine hit. This is also progress that you won't lose if you can't play for a couple of weeks.
