You can thank "adult" cartoons like South Park and Family Guy for that. There's less demand for shows that truly appeal to people of all ages in today's segregated TV. "Adult" cartoons are targeted at males between the age of 15-30. That's a wide range, and that range depends on who you use as your source. Some will say "12-25", others "18-34" but I'm just looking at at averages (which are just that average). That in mind, I think most of the people who watch Family Guy are younger than those that watch South Park. And Boring in right, animated shows (I'm excluding South Park as Matt and Trey will always do what they want to do without regard to who writes their paychecks) all try to find their niche.

But, holy shit did anyone else watch Beavis and Butthead last week? So incredible. 14 years later, same show, same humor, same belly laughs.

All i have to say is, to the girls in this thread are above the age of 18 and watch the show... Would you date and sleep with a guy who is in love with this show and acknowledges it?

Sorry to bump this thread, but I felt it was necessary to mention that Lauren Faust is Craig McCracken's wife. She's been mentioned as "somebody who worked on the Powerpuff Girls," but since she's intimately tied to the creator of the show, I'm going to imagine she was way, way more involved with how it turned out than is implied by that statement, even before she was officially part of the project.

Faust is a wonderful woman who goes out of her way to break down the gendering of media that is being forced upon little girls these days. Yes, MLP is a feminine-ish show, but as was pointed out earlier, MLP:FIM is one of the only such shows that doesn't beat female children over the head with certain messages like: 1) your goal in life is to get a prince charming, 2) you get a prince charming by being pretty and fashionable, 3) being submissive is proper behavior for a woman, and 4) being princesses and fairies are the only two imaginative scenarios worth entertaining.

I don't know if any of you have seen the "Disney Fairies" books and merchandise that revolve around Tinkerbell, but I work at a library and have cracked open a volume or two. These Fairies each have a primary "talent" that falls into some general category, some of which include Laundry, Sewing, and Table Setting. Table Setting! From what I saw in a few pictures, no boy Fairies (or "Sparrow-Men," as they're called) did Laundry, Sewing, or Table Setting. Some worked in the kitchen, but that's less gendered territory, and most of the men were carrying big, heavy bundles of food instead of cooking. There were no girl Scouts (lookouts and adventurers), and the only "mean" Fairy was a black-haired assertive woman whose talent was athletically based.

This kind of stuff makes me CRAZY.

For those who like MLP, I highly suggest you look into Faust's brainchild Milky Way & The Galaxy Girls, although it seems the official website for them has been taken down. Well, she created a batch of characters called The Galaxy Girls, each of whom are unique and have a variety of interests and talents (which, unlike the world of Disney, include things like surfing and reading), because she was annoyed that other toys and dolls for girls focused so much on what they wore to the exclusion of everything else.

IIRC, working on the show together is where they first met. So, no, she would have had no influence at all until the third season, when she was hired.

I stand corrected! Now that I think about it, I suppose I'd just been assuming they went back further than that.

The PPG dvd set has a very nice documentary that mentions all that actually. Pretty good, worth a watch.

I wil always find funny how Jerry Beck thought this show was the end of the "creator-driven era" of cartoons.
