lol, yeah, the pin heads were cake to solder compared to the *.

OK, so I found the "prefessional" way to do it. I even found an example for a * (I'm using a TSOP40)

That "sweep out" method with a hoof tip I've seen in a few videos now. I'll have to get a hoof tip and some liquid no-clean flux, that should do the trick. And here's one of the same guy using the "drag" method...

Interesting. I just picked up a new tip for my crappy iron since I've already sharpened it a few times from it being eaten away. Maybe I'll file it into a hoof tip and keep it in case I end up doing any tiny stuff in future.

Lol, I do that too and was thinking the same thing! I've grind down worn tips back to a point to avoid buying new ones. I was also planning on grinding an old tip into a hoof.

I ordered a bottle of liquid no-clean flux and a dispenser from AlliedElec.com, first time ordering from them. Let's hope they're as good as said to be and they don't suck.

I thought this was pretty awesome too. http://www.instructables.com/id/Solderi ... pper-wire/

But I don't have a drill press or a tap & die set.

Whoa, that is pretty cool. I think I could do that, too. I don't have a drill press, but I think I can get away with out one. They use it to shape the tip, I could do that on my bench grinder (which is what I use to reshape my old tips anyway). I even have a tap and die set, although it might not be the correct size for my irons, but they're cheap enough anyway. Thanks for the link, Hobie!

So does that mean? I don't have to buy a new iron every time my tip breaks?

RadioShack Irons are cheaper than the tip!

So I placed that order with AlliedElec.com, and now I kinda wish I didn't. It's been about 24 hours and I haven't recieved any kind of email from them yet. Worst off, I didn't create an account to check, I just used one of those "guest checkouts" that they have, so I can't cancel my order. I might call them up and try to cancel.

So this how-to video that Hobie's linked a few times...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NU2ruzyc4

(which is great) has a link in the info for a store...

http://www.curiousinventor.com/kits/tools

which actually looks pretty nice. They actually have every thing I need to pick up (in one spot - yay!). So hopefully I can cancel my AlliedElec order and just go with Curious Inventor.

Warning, rant:

God damn! I finally got a confirmation email from Allied which included an order number and whatnot. I was thinking about calling up to cancel but decided not to. I wanna get the flux right away, so I figure I'll just let the order go through.

So here's how Allied works, you place an order with out knowing how much shipping will be. They send you an email once it ships with how much the total actual is. So when I placed the order, there was a $5 handling fee plus shipping AND tax which was yet to be determined. So I'm figuring, whatever, shipping will be like $5-10 and not that big of deal. They charged me $17 and change for shipping! What a bunch of ass holes they are! PLUS tax, too! They suck. I ordered like $12 worth of stuff and it ended up costing me almost $40. That'll probably be the last time I order from them.

I don't think I've heard of many S&H processes that could be worse than what you just experienced. Is that even legal? 0_o

I guess so. They pulled some shit saying the flux is a "hazardous material" so it can't ship USPS. But $17 to ship a 4oz bottle and an empty plastic bottle? Did I not hear about UPS' rates going way up this past week? And of course I'm forgetting how heavy they are, thus the $5 handling fee.
