Good to see that in a thread that has recently discussed the horrible situation in Syria, the barbarity of ISIS and the ever present question of gun control, the issue that got people most riled up is how easy or not easy it is to rent a car in Europe.
Re: So the whole world is kind of falling apart...
I think the fact that you said that means you probably wouldn't be able to rent a car in Germany.

Well, I don't drive so I'd expect not.
Re: So the whole world is kind of falling apart...
Ah, well then. Not driving is really the best option all around. You win. Well-played, Mr. Soap, well played...

I wasn't, that is genuinely my main concern until I'm older and I start to worry more with illnesses.LBJeff wrote:If you are using this in defense of gun ownership, it's such a red herring, logical fallacy that I'm amazed anybody with an IQ higher than 5 would use it. If not, my mistake.Ivo wrote:

I think I was on the record on this in the forum, I'm ok with gun ownership but in the U.S. it seems a bit ridiculous how easy it is to get some types of guns. I think in most countries in Europe you can own guns with proper licenses, just possibly not small ones that you can easily conceal.
It is a question of freedoms - people should be allowed to own a gun, but other people should be allowed to know that there are proper checks in place that verify gun owners are mildly responsible. Passing some test and renewing it periodically when you get older (in fact like driver's license) is a good idea IMO.
Also, I generally don't drive. I cycle!

One of the other big problems in the US is that while established sellers have to do background checks, person-to-person sales and many gun show sales are not subject to background checks. Further, if the background check system is backlogged, any requests older than 4 days automatically pass. So if some psycho buys a gun on the right day that his check is delayed, once 4 days passes he's good to go, regardless of what might have been on his various records (unless there is a specific legal prohibition against him owning a gun, as is the case with many violent felons).
I really thinks guns should be registered and owners properly licensed. Licenses should be much like drivers licenses. You should have to demonstrate basic knowledge of how to use and maintain firearms in order to own and use them. People don't mind jumping through these hoops for cars, which, in most of the US, are essential. Guns aren't really essential at all for most US citizens these days, so it's not like that kind of requirement would impose undue inconvenience or scrutiny.
Besides, the NRA lobbies hard in opposition to these kinds of proposals, despite most NRA members, and most members of the general US public, being in support of them.

Interesting article on how the people you know can change your perception of how the majority of people feel about a given issue. Basically explains how a vocal minority can give the impression of being a majority.
