Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I stumbled upon pictures of crt tv, and those things look atrocious. Can’t believe how heavy and large they were compared to what we have today. I bet the technology to a millinial looks like what a 60s IBM mainframe look like to a Macbook Air user. The ironic thing they were still ubiquitous up until recently, I think they were still being sold new in 2011-2013. one sure thing, it gave a very different definition to a Television than what the modern digital display does.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Have you never owned a CRT? They have a certain strength, despite their inconvenience.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I lived with CRTs more than I lived with flat panel HDTVs, but other than they work better with devices that were built specifically to be used with them what advantages do they have? I thought the dark blacks were solved with OLED?marurun wrote:Have you never owned a CRT? They have a certain strength, despite their inconvenience.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
CRTs handle resolution switches and non-native resolutions much better.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
In addition to being more adaptable with respect to resolution and refresh rate, CRTs still win out on input latency and lack of motion blur. Of course, a lot of that is focusing on things that are largely relevant for gaming, and using monitors that are more capable than the vast majority of CRTs ever made. Flat panel displays have a lot of things going for them as well.
I don't think they'd seem quite as dated (yet) as you'd mentioned, well, some of them at least. The super rounded styles certainly clash with the direction display technology has gone, but they still probably fit into a retro aesthetic.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I actually don't mind going back to CRT if it has the better picture, I thought people switched to flatpanels because the output is much clearer 1080P over I am guessing 480p for CRT. I know they made HD CRTs but I believed the flatpanels still had better picture output, I don't mind the weight or size as I will not be carrying it.isiolia wrote: In addition to being more adaptable with respect to resolution and refresh rate, CRTs still win out on input latency and lack of motion blur. .
The only thing I prefer flatpanels over CRTs is that CRT had this big "BOING" sound when turned on and their electric suction seemed scary dangerous compared to the LCD which you can turn on/off all day long.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Honestly, the move to HD LCDs from HD CRTs was largely because CRTs were much more expensive to ship and less convenient in the home. HD CRTs were dead on the market well before LCD flat panels could rival their contrast and color clarity.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
CRTs were more expensive to ship, but I wonder if the shipping of a 75 LCD equals '40 CRT, because what was lost in weight was gained in size. CRT were definitely heavier and therefor more expensive to ship but I recall prices were similar, does this mean that the manufacturer kept the cost savings?
