Been meaning to see this for a while. I have The Criterion Collection release on DVD, but I watched the Blu-Ray release from Universal.

Good. Weird. Worth it.

You are now legally required to watch "where the buffalo roam". Just imagine hunter s thompson played by bill Murray instead of Johnny Depp. I'm not claiming it's a better movie, just that it's a movie which must be watched.
prfsnl_gmr wrote:So...has anyone else here seen Speed Racer (2008)? I just finished it, and while I had read it was worthy of critical redemption, I had no idea how ridiculously good it would be. It is easily the best Wachowski film, and probably one of the best films of your '00s. (Visually, it is undoubtedly THE best.) If you are a fan of cinema, I really can't recommend it highly enough.
Love Speed Racer. This is visually spectacular! This movie nailed the "cartoon come to life" aesthetic better than the flintstones or scooby doo movies ever did.

I would hesitate to call this better than the first matrix movie, but that's only because I love that flick so much.

I love that the film makers completely embraced the cheese factor with full force. I wish franchises like g.i. Joe or transformers would follow this mindset instead of trying to make a "serious" movie about a cartoon that was only broadcast to sell toys.

John Goodman was born to play warm paternal characters like Pops. Roger Allam was born to play devious villains. Christina Ricci was born to play brunette waifs. Emile Hirsch makes the perfect boy-faced protagonist. Every actor embraced their pigeonholed role to make this movie exactly what it needed to be: beautiful cheese.

Yes! Another Speed Racer fan! I am glad someone else - and an artist, no less! - appreciates it.

Also, to fans of Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, I recommend The Banshee Chapter. Noise recommended it to me a few years ago, and it is a pretty great horror film with a Hunter S. Thompson-inspired main character.

Last night, my wife and I watched the Netflix Death Note feature film adaptation. If you are looking for a slavish recreation of the manga/show, you are going to be very disappointed. Even if you are only looking for a film that follows the same beats and touches on the same issues, you are going to be disappointed. If, however, you go into it with limited expectations and try to enjoy it for what it is rather than what it might have been - and it would have been an awesome 4-6 episode show - I think you will enjoy it. It is a solid 7-8 out of 10 movie, and I thought it was a fun spin on the source material. (The director, Adam Wingard, also does a fantastic John Carpenter impression - he arguably does John Carpenter better than John Carpenter himself - and fans of John Carpenter's work will most certainly appreciate it.). The female character in the film was also drastically better than her character in the original, and L was cast wonderfully and stole all of his scenes. Ryuk, voiced by Willem Defoe was also pretty great.

Honestly, I think a sequel starring L rather than Light would be really fun. (Without spoiling too much, I will say that the film does not stick to the original's story.)

Jennifer Carpenter was simply a bad choice for this movie. Otherwise it could have been slightly better than mediocre.

I am always happy to find another fan of Where the Buffalo Roam. It's a bit different to see Bill Murray and Peter Boyle than what we are used to with Johnny Depp, but it still conveys just how weirdly incredible and incredibly weird Hunter S. Thompson was. I recommend it.

Too true, Ack.

What strikes me about Where the Buffalo Roam is the amorality of Hunter S. Thompson. It's not only that he commits devious acts free of consequence; furthermore it's that Thompson's devious actions run counter to the corrupt pseudo~morality of the time.

Also, drugs and titties!

you guys should watch The Banshee Chapter, which is one of the most bizarre yet somehow it works mash-ups of things. It is ostensibly a remake of From Beyond, Stuart Gordon's 1986 Lovecraft adaptation... but this version features MK Ultra and a thinly veiled Hunter S. Thompson (aka: they just used a different name, but the character is clearly supposed to be Thompson).

I'd give that to another James Cameron film, Aliens. But T2 is a badass film, I'm not knocking on it, I'm only kidding around.

I just recently rewatched Speed Racer and have always been a fan, but now I saw it in a very different light. It is better than I remember. They effectively packed in huge amounts of information in ways that were brilliantly executed and didn't feel ham-fisted or out of place with its tone. The presentation was great and one of the few special effects heavy movies that feels natural and fitting to the movie's spirit. I absolutely adore it and would agree with folks on saying that it is the wachowski's best!
