I should mention that it's not really for hipster points. I go on a website called icheckmovies which is dying but I still recommend. I finished the two big canon lists and then I decided on going through the best of *insert country* lists made by scholars of those countries. It was fun to do yet sad because there are films with a lot of clout in those countries, but all they have available are like VHS or tv rips with fan made subtitles. Shame that they are so neglected because they can be fantastic.

What is this self-referential hipsterism? It feels like an elevation of being a hipster to a new level.

It was a joke username I made up for my youtube video hobby. It is just because with films and music I explore the super niche stuff, and those were the two words people would say to me all the time. I thought having that as a username would be self-deprecating, but not in a way that turns people off.

you stream torrents?! Like click and play like Netflix? I saw that with the old PopcornTime but it was abandoned AFAIK. Maybe you have a shared private server with all the media on it and it works like a private Netflix for its users?

You already did; iTunes killed music sharing. Steam killed piracy.

Granted, both of those still exist, but not nearly to the extent that they did before. Same with movie/TV show torrents.

Not too sure about iTunes, people kept pirating their music libraries even after the iTunes Store. iTunes prices was similar to physical prices except it allowed for per song purchase and gave the convenience of the digital format. I don't know how big is the average music library size but lets assume its 300 songs, thats still $300! But for Spotifies $10 and you get instant access to music history, thats a death sentence to music piracy.

As for Steam, buying a game for $5 sure beats having to hunt for a pirated copy and making it work  Honestly, I just thought game piracy was dead because it became much more difficult to crack a game in the modern day, no one has time to download 20GB game only to learn the serial won't work. Game prices having significantly decreased, you can get quality games for $5-10 ownership that can give 10s of hours of entertainment on the opposite of movies that is just 2hrs for $3-5 rent.

Game cracking is not significantly harder than it was 10-20 years ago, but that barrier has always been higher than exchanging money for the game and it just works. There's a tipping point where pricing is low enough that you "what the hell" it and purchase rather than deal with a crack.

Yes game piracy is still as prevalent as it's always been. With high speed internet 20g is nothing and of course you read comments to see if the dam thing works. Of course your not playing online, no patches, no updates, no dlc. You're stuck on that version.
