I've seen it speculated that the decision to omit Donkey Kong from the sequels was a deliberate choice by Rare who felt affronted by Miyamoto's comments about the first game proving that gamer's would always accept graphical horsepower over gameplay.Tanooki wrote:Late to this DK jam party, but I'm on the same thoughts that it was kind of downhill after the first as it just had the best play, feel, characters(DK only in this which is dumb), design and atmosphere over all. I hated DKC2 in comparison, not a fan of the collectarding up coins to get further plus no DK bugged me a lot.

DKCR is missing Kremlins, thus it is automatically inferior to the previous entries.Xeogred wrote:The DKC Returns hate here is hilarious. I give up.

I made a quick thread on games under ten dollars and snesdrunk wrote it up and thanks to him and his knowledge it came out pretty good.
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Nothing hilarious about it, it is sad really. The changes are not good, but clearly you like it so we wont agree.
Then again I think you thought wind waker was bad and majoras mask was excellent.

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
I've already said that I enjoy Returns and TF greatly, but since the discussion is at hand...
I think the original games and the new games just aren't trying to do the same things. With the original trilogy, I just like being there, sight-seeing, doing some nice platforming. Its the atmosphere, the environments and music, and the nice feel of the characters that draw me in.
The new games, admittedly, fall short in this aspect. But they are, by a large margin, much more tightly designed, platforming-focused games. Every placement of every enemy and item, every curve of every platform, feels meticulously placed. I think this is especially apparent when doing the "K" levels, since you are basically required to perform them perfectly, but its consistent through both of the games.
I would place the original games in a similar category to Banjo Kazooie and the like, and the newer games closer to Super Meat Boy. I think both styles of game are great, just for completely different reasons.

This is what I think makes the new games superior. Yeah that's right.dunpeal2064 wrote:But they are, by a large margin, much more tightly designed, platforming-focused games. Every placement of every enemy and item, every curve of every platform, feels meticulously placed.
Although, everybody seems to say that the new games lack atmosphere. I'm not sure I agree with that. The silhouette levels alone are so gorgeous and moody.

I wouldn't say they lack it, but it's not as nice.
Now I like that comparison shopping there on the game bundles in relation to other franchises. I think I'd very much agree with it that DKC is more loosy goosy with the style as it's more about enjoyable paced gameplay with well laid out structures, but it's not taking itself overly seriously. The newer ones are rigid to a fault, in the meatboy style where you have to be a master of each domain to a point of near perfection or you'll end up dead meat. A lot of people do not appreciate that style of gaming, it's really meant for more of the hardcore perfectionist type gamer and it's good they have an outlet in those newer DK titles like that. But if you're more of an easy going well crafted experience like a classic Mario or a Banjo type game, the older original trilogy would be more your speed.

Dear Super Nintendo,
It's been years since I've been looking for games for you to enjoy in your system. I once sold all your children in order to own a home. The mario's, Zelda, mega man, castlevania, almost 100 of your children gone.
Well now that I own a house and did buy a everdrive so you can have a taste to have all those wonderful games back to be played and games I could never get for me and my friends to play.
So today snes I went looking around after playing and hanging around your next door neighbor sega genesis and it's come to my attention that you children are too expensive for my cheap broke ass. They all are rich and expensive and don't want anyone to play with them anymore.
It's simple snes, I wanted for you to enjoy a steak dinner a top of the line sirloin but instead your getting steak ums. Sorry snes your sticking with your foster children who are clones called mr everdrive.
All kidding aside I went looking areound and man the prices have jumped a lot from what I remember a few years ago.
I hope the bubble pops in a year or so but I know it wont

I think we might need to accept that current high prices for games for key systems may not be a bubble at all, but simply the new status quo. I don't foresee any circumstances that would lead to a broad reversal of these pricing trends.
