Thrash wise Overkill, Anthrax, and Exodus are stiil pretty energetic live. Just saw Voivod and they put on a great show but I guess it helped having new blood in the band. Iron Reagen opened for them but besides the singer stayed in one spot hardly moving. Evile is actually one of the most boring bands I have ever seen live.

it's funny, i saw a show that ran the gamut of thrash quality a couple years ago. Kreator, Overkill and Warbringer. Warbringer was boring as hell, followed by the best set ever from Overkill, and then a pretty lackluster set from Kreator.

I feel the same way about this new "retro thrash" as I do about the "new wave of tradition doom metal" (yes people call it this), slam death metal, "post" metal of various varieties, and so on.......... It's mostly boring as hellz.

I do like Devourment. I'll say that much.

But the best thing about Devourment is that they aren't a Devourment rip-off.

Yeah, I have to say I'm actually a bit of a sucker for good blackened thrash (although admittedly it requires an appreciation for both thrash and black metal). In point of fact I actually enjoy a lot of the 'blackened' offshoots. Black & Roll can be pretty great when done properly (see: some of Satyricon's latter day stuff and the first Kvelertak album), and dirty secret time, I've even eked enjoyment out of Deafheaven - Sunbather, which is pretty much labeled as the poster child for everything wrong with 'Post Black Metal' (regardless of whether it's true or not).

I dunno though, I try not to get too terribly hung up on sub-genre classifications other than as an indication of what I can expect from a band I've not yet heard. If it sounds good to me, it is good (in the objective sense, and for the entire world ). Trve kvlt, I am not.

Bone, leave doom out of the conversation. Doom is my baby and I love it.

Liturgy is bad.

I do like some "post" whatever metal. The first Alcest full-length is one of my all-time favorite albums.

As for Wolves in the Throne Room (another band that gets tons of shit), I first heard them out of context - on some random sampler - and swore it was 1996-ish 2nd gen black metal. Good stuff.
