The .ips one available on romhacking crashes the game. I had a similar problem with Der Langrisser when I first got the console but that issue was remedied (with a new modified patch??) a couple of years back.

There's also a .bps Deep Dungeon III patch but the Retron 5 does not support that format. I've heard that a .bps file can be converted to .ips. Can anyone confirm? Probably won't solve my issue but it's worth a shot.
Yes it's possible to convert from bps to ips...in a roundabout way but it works. Use a program like beats to write the bps patch to the rom it's meant for, then use lunar ips to create an ips patch between the original rom and the patched rom. I've done that for you for Deep Dungeon III.

Or you can find it in my mediafire database for all of my patches in the nes section (linked in the topic creator's first post). The original IPS patch you tried probably didn't work by the way because the instructions state on romhacking.net to expand the rom on your PC first, which isn't exactly reasonable nor possible on the Retron 5 so this converted BPS to IPS patch should get around that issue. If there wasn't a bps patch available to use it still would have been possible to fix up a proper ips for the Retron 5 based on the one you already tried prior so if you'd like to know how let me know and i'll get into that as well.
I didn't see your above post until now, but I got it working!

I actually used the method you outlined here.

Basically I downloaded a pre-patched version of the game from a ROM site, and then used LunarIPS to transform that into the English .ips patch.

So, thanks!

Well R5 doesn't like ToP on SFC....at least mine doesn't. I downloaded the first update on the page to see if that fixed it...nope. Would think with how long it had been since I last updated that they would've fixed that...

Edit: D'oh! Thought I'd cleaned it enough to work in the system...nope got it to work now....

Well, it finally happened.

After 2 years of no real problems, the NES slot on my Retron 5 is no more. I believe it all started with a Battle of Olympus cartridge I bought from the local game store earlier this year that had an unbelievably tight grip whenever I put it in, I started noticing bent pins after that, but for at least another 6 months or so, it was working just fine, then I noticed a small metal object just outside the NES slot, and as I opened it up, I found around 2-3 more of the same thing, it turns out the pins popped out of the slot. Any cartridge I tried after that was unknown or "failed to dump ROM".

As a result, I was unable to complete Solomon's Key in time by the end of the month for Together Retro. I was only about 10 rooms away.

My options for now are very limited; Hyperkin is still out of stock and the Amazon profiteers are running rampant. The next one I want to get is going to be the revision with the supposed "better build quality" and better pins from what I understand. Off to eBay I go, but at least the rest of the slots are still working fine for now. I'm still pretty miffed because I've been getting NES cartridges like crazy as a result of owning one and I used that slot the most.

Sorry brah. NES slot is what killed my original model too. I've had much better luck with the revision.

Do you have Books-A-Million near you? In Maine that's where I occasionally see them. Local independent game shops may carry the system as well.

You could use a 60-to-72 pin converter for a short term fix.

Negative. My converters (60-72 and 72-60) did not allow the game to be recognized.

Oh shit, really? Damn. That sucks. Nevermind then. I never actually tried it; I just sort of assumed that it would work.

That seems strange, I assumed those would work. Just for yucks I'll try mine later.

I guess as a last ditch fix, you could download ROMs and make a patch to exploit the patch system. It's FAR from ideal, but it's better than nothing in the short term.

Either you got a larger problem or an odd connector who detests the thing. I've got a honeybee that works with it.

Sorry it fried. Mine was doing it on the original model too. That's when I had that big deal I kept people up to date on here over where it ended up with the main office cutting in due to my chatting with the tech and making them give me a pre-released boxed up copy of the modern v2 system. It hasn't treated me wrong, but that first one started to just not read games one after another starting with SMB2 of all things.
