With the PS4 Pro and XBox One Scorpio announced and hitting shelves soon, why will gamers care about the NX?
People keep throwing this argument out there, but I guess in the past what Nintendo would do is hit up FOX/CNN and news stations to start hyping up the Wii and maybe previous systems, which reaches a lot of people.
But the playing field is a lot different nowadays. I mean it can go both ways, the moment they talk about the NX the internet will spread the fire, but yeah.
Man I have no idea. No denying it's weird. We all know Nintendo clearly doesn't care about MS/Sony and competing with them, but they should still be a bit more aggressive and informative about this.
I think they've been burned just one too many times, plus they're wholly under new Japanese management with a widely different strategy on how to approach stuff because Iwata was stuck in his ways. The guy now is all pro-Android/iOS, pro more keeping your cards close, and beyond that it's hard to say what else. The truth remains we don't know much what this thing can really be capable of doing as it's all speculation around which potential Tegra v1 or v2 of their modern (nvidia shield tech) microconsole/tablet GPU+CPU hardware they're going with. Neither are a slouch, but you're like going between a pretty notable quality increase as where the current model can kind of faux PS3 look in apperance with games keyed into being just made for it, we know not what really the v2 can do but it will be a stark improvement.
No they're not competing with Sony/MS which is a good thing as that's a clown car waiting to consume itself under their current model. You just have to wonder how far they'll push it with this device and at what price point. Given how badly WiiU did, how much they're mocked and screwed with by fan nerds and media shills it's better not to say a damn thing now until things are really finalized and some solid software is made up to really sell it to the masses. That may be the plan, a way to re-introduce Nintendo on a new direction that will hopefully for them be widely more accepted and bought over WiiU. They keep saying it's not android, but the more you can read from developers online NintendOS is an android reskin sort of like FireOS for Amazon.

Yeah, I just don't really get it. Especially as latest "news" is Nintendo will be giving away a NX as a prize in a competition next year. I mean, really? You haven't even announced the console or explained what it is, Nintendo, but you're happy to announce you'll give one away in the competition?
Maybe all will become clear when it is announced, but it seems odd to me that they're not marketing it or building hype. Especially if it really is coming out in March.
The internet is saying that a NX announcement is "imminent" (with many sites speculating it could be late September or early October), but let's be honest, the internet has been saying that for months.
Maybe I'm out of touch and don't know much about marketing, but to me it makes no sense that they just didn't announce it at E3 or some other gaming event.
The Wii U is dead (other than Zelda next year) and the 3DS is on the way out, surely Nintendo should be reminding people that Nintendo isn't dead and marketing the shit out of their new console?
I know Nintendo say they don't compete with Sony or Microsoft, but let's be honest, the comparisons will always be there. Unless they can start another revolution, like they did with the Wii, people will make comparisons.

If recent examples like Fallout 4 have taught me anything, it's that you really don't need to drag hype through months and years to have a really successful launch. You can give a big ass presentation when your product is only a few months out, and still be really successful. In my opinion, it's much more about how you market than how long you market (reasonably speaking. I'm not suggesting a week or a day and half of brilliant marketing will do the same as a few months of the same marketing).

Well that's a good point, but not sure about the comparison between a game and a new console. Unless they can flip our world upside down and the reveal is something mindblowing, yeah I just don't get that they keep waiting on it. Not like I can particularly remember every console launch in my 25+ some years as a fan, but this certainly seems to be one of the oddest with there literally being no buildup or official information. Previously I'd think we at least got a year or so between detailed revealings and a launch. Are they super confident about it or is it going to be an even crazier gamble than the Wii was?
Thankfully I think they learned their lesson with names and marketing. The 3DS took damage from that name, and it's probably another big reason the Wii "U" suffered a lot because casual consumers can't really differentiate between what the difference is between that and a Wii. You need a much more different name for something completely new. (which makes me think Sony naming the Neo the Pro actually makes a lot of sense, it's just a "better" PS4 and not something entirely new).
All in all I don't really feel like this is the only odd thing going on right now though, everything about Nintendo seems off. Not like I'm worried about their future at all or anything, but even beyond the weird mystery behind the NX everything they're doing lately gets a big WTF from me. Never really seen a big console publisher this seclusive about literally everything they're doing lately. lol
I suspect they're just getting all their ducks in a row before they announce anything. I'm sure they're well aware of the issues and consumer complaints surrounding the Wii U and 3DS and it's my hope that they're just ironing out any perceived kinks before making anything official. The new head honcho strikes me as an 'iron out the issues first' kind of guy. At least on the business side.
I suspect the stories of a possible reveal around late Sep. or early Oct. are accurate. If it's true that the console will release in March, than that would be within the typical time frame between when the most recent consoles have been officially announced to when they launch (Not including rumors of "we're pretty sure 'Company X' is working on 'Project Y'").
I agree that it would be nice to have a little more information about it. But really, how often has Nintendo ever been that liberal about announcements until they're ready?
I just hope they don't fuck it up. Assuming the prevalent rumors about a handheld/console hybrid are true, that could very easily be the most amazing thing since VR porn or the worst thing since Game.com.

If they were paying attention and learned anything in the last several years, they will not. And if they were not paying attention..... Well, I predict a lot of cringing and sobbing.
