EDIT: P.S. just to be sure - you weren't looking for just 'Antiriad' or perhaps 'The Sacred Armour of Antiriad' were you?

It does look familiar in some way but I can't name it... it looks like a DOS or an NES game.

I was thinking a handheld - perhaps the Lynx? The aspect ratio is weird, and the text is large so that it can be read easily...

I think the Lynx had a brighter palette than that. The muted colours look like Commodore 64 to me, but DOS is a possibility too I guess.
