I'm about maxed out. I just played like a dozen games on the Genesis, and I never make it past level 5.
All my scores are fairly close. 210-230k range, always around 350 zooped and 5:40 time played. I manage all 4 sides when I play, and at level 5 they spawn to quick for me to keep all 4 sides setup for max chain zoops. I'm gonna guess your doing something different as your zooped total is close to double what I get. I still have not seen a spring clear yet either.
You should snag the PS1 version and try for IVO's 400k record.
Out of the 3 versions I played the hardest was the SNES, then the Genesis, the PS1 was the easiest.

Re: Together Retro: Zoop
Yeah I gave the PS1 version a shot on EPSXE but I prefer the Genesis version myself. The controls are a little more responsive (at least to me). I might give the PS1 version a go though. I'm curious if I can beat Ivo's score.
Also, next time I play the Gen version I'll record it so you can see how I do it. I don't really go by a specific strategy really. Basically, I just try to keep one or two colors wiped out completely when the game first starts so I can focus on doing full row clears with the others, and then when the speed starts increasing I just sort of improvise and hope for the best.

Re: Together Retro: Zoop
I'm getting my physical copy of Zoop a little late, I'll probably want to play some more after you all have moved on to Gradius III and Parodius, at least for a little bit. My goal is to break 100k...need to get on that.

^I'll keep playing as well, just an FYI. I want to see if I can break 300k.

Genesis: 382700
I agree with others, the Genesis version is overall harder.
You can score more "per zoop" due to the smaller Vertical clears (only 4 zoops) which compensates a bit but altogether I think the larger playing fields make it easier to score larger values. The difference is probably not THAT big but it matters
It is definitively possible to collect 5 springs in the Genesis, although as I mentioned already about the PS1 the springs appear more often in later levels.
Ivo.

Re: Together Retro: Zoop
I never got to do this with the TR club -- but I have a neat story about Zoop.
In February of 1995 (before the game was released), I was able to be a part of a research panel/focus group about this game. There were about 5 or 6 of us in front of PCs for this study, and we got to play a pre-release version of this game. At the time, it was called "Hooked" (a play on the developer Hookstone) and it used the "H" blimp on the title screen. The gameplay was exactly the same, and instead of weird colored shapes, they were simply colored cubes/squares, and in addition to the power ups on the finished product, if you collected 5 rocket cubes, you built a rocket which would land on the middle of the field, eliminating ALL the colored squares. After we played it in certain modes (endurance & level based), the Viacom New Media marketing representative asked us our opinions. Best of all, we got PAID!!!!!
This was just one of many research panels I was able to be a part of, and probably the most fun.
