I have a hard time even thinking about touching Burzum. While I admire art in many forms, I generally feel dirty and terrible admiring anything from Varg. He is the antithesis of many of my moral principles.
I absolutely despise Axel Rose. But I love me some Guns N' Roses.. My point:
Sometimes you just need to put aside your particular hate for one man to enjoy art..

...even if that one man is completely responsible for the decline of a genre. Imagine if Euronymous were still around.
Well.. despite the fact that I dislike Axl Rose as well, he's not a Nationalist and Murderer who also planned to blow up a peaceful commune. I'm not saying that I don't enjoy the music he creates on an artistic level, but it's scary when you find you appreciate something that comes from someone so despicable.

To me it's like saying "dude, I love Hitler's last album so much!" I also suppose that the tension he creates is appealing. There are plenty of artists I really enjoy that I also think are douche-bags as people. Like... why would I listen to white power hardcore punk? I listen to hardcore because a great deal of it "rejects" that particular ideal and I sympathize with that. Hardcore has plenty of aspects I don't like about it as well, but what I guess I'm getting at here is that there is some cognitive dissonance.

I completely get your point and I'm able to do that with a lot of artists, but I guess I feel that way because of "the media". Ironic isn't it? :roll:

I totally understand! It's definitely a conflict of morals vs art when an artist's personal character speaks volumes of conflicting ideals to the beholder's own. (And personally, one of the many things I love about Atari Teenage Riot was their blatant rebellion against neo-nazi dance-punk fascism.. Plus I loved every one of their songs.)

I'm just saying I completely understand the conflict of recognizing art when it's origins come from hatred. Beauty within darkness and all that, I guess...

@fvgazi

I hear ya about Burzum.

I started listening to Burzum when I was 13 (1996). Information about black metal on the internet was scarce, and I had no idea about any of the Norway murders/arsons. I generally bought albums blindly, based on cover art that I liked, then eventually I stuck to bands on certain labels (Century Media, Metal Blade, etc). I was horrified when I read about Varg some years later, and I still haven't brought myself to listen to any of the new Burzum material.
