Engineers typically dont want things condensed. They want specific experiences spelled out. My title at this company is an instrumentation specialist and at KBR I was a control systems engineer. At my company the cse title does a lot of different things.
I really dont think I could make a 1 page resume that accurately portrayed what my skillset is beyond a very generic sense.

I'm surprised at the importance of resumes in all of your fields. My interview process is two-fold. Did you tick all the boxes required of the job (you have the certifications, you have the experience, and you can prove it) and then how are you face to face. The resume, 1 page or 5 page is a relic and essentially all it does is show that you are good at self promotion when needed. We don't want self promoters - to get the job, you need the skill / education / and customer service, a piece of paper doesn't express any of that - only performance and face to face interaction can validate this. Anyone can type 1, 5, or 10 pages of accomplishments. Can you sit down with me and show me compassion, empathy, common sense, technical accuity and can you treat every single person who regardless of their appearance, demeanor, ability to pay, and every other attribute - as though they are the most important customer you have.

tl;dr - if your potential employer needs to see paper, look elsewhere. Get them to talk to you - that's it.

One might say that formal education culminates into a piece of paper.

That is going to be covered in the education section of any application. It doesn't need to be repeated on a resume.

The last three jobs I had did not have an application. Just drop off your resume.

For most careers a resume and a cover letter essentially is your application.

A properly made one covers all of the essential information an employer would be looking for anyway.

Don't forget to turn up the volume when you're playing it; it has one of the best soundtracks to grace the Super Famicom!

This. Resume > Interview > Job
Never be afraid to bend the rules when looking for a job, too. It's not a good idea overall, but if you need work, you do what you must. In my most recent job hunt, every business I walked into asked me to apply online. I never heard back from any of them. So, out of frustration, I lied and told the next place I walked into that I had submitted an application online weeks ago, but never heard back. They were the only business to ask me for my resume in the store. Two hours later, I had an interview lined up with them, and that is how I got my job.
