Yes, A Bridge Too Far is IMO the best WW2 film.

In the past two months I've only seen two films, both mediocre. The Expendables 2 and Doctor Strange. Note to self; watch a decent film this weekend.

Damn, Man Of Steel was good! I liked this a lot. You guys know I'm not a huge Supe fan, but I really enjoyed this take.

Apocalypse Now is an amazing film, one of my all time favorites. But it's more a film about the psychological effects of being a soldier, for too long and in the wrong place, more so than documenting a war effort and its consequences. (Also it's a Vietnam film, not a WW2 one.) If you haven't seen Full Metal Jacket, watch it and Apocalypse Now together and thank me later.

Yeah I know it's Vietnam, was just throwing it out there though. I just watched it for the first time last week and it blew my mind. Almost a Blade Runner level experience with that dense atmosphere, the epic landscape shots, the awesome music, etc. It was a real descent into madness. It feels like it goes pretty well with Jacob's Ladder, which I love as well. I guess I do realize these are very different than normal war movies probably, haha. More thriller in ways... but definitely my kind of stuff.

The only thing I was iffy on was Dennis Hopper. He sold that role perfectly and was very believable, but... I don't know. It was just a bit too funny and took me out of it a bit when the rest seemed really grounded. I love Hopper, but yeah haha. Maybe you know what I mean.

Full Metal Jacket I saw a long time ago, I'll probably rewatch it sometime soon.

Guess I should check out A Bridge Too Far myself sometime. I'm not that versed in war films.

Oh I see now. I read your original question as "Is Apocalypse Now good?", making me think you hadn't seen it. Totally missed the "it" part of your question.

A Bridge Too Far is a fantastic film, but it's nothing like Apocalypse Now, very different things to contrast. I'd say it's as good a film as Apocalypse Now, but in ways that aren't mutual between the two. A Bridge Too Far is a classically styled war film, but it's just the best at what it did. Another of my favorite war films is Downfall.

That looks intriguing since it seems to be a German production? Always nice to get some perspective in history.

Now for the laughs, is there anything quite like Wolfenstein in movie form? haha, I love weird alternate history stories like that in media. Though, specifically thinking of The New Order because of all the high tech sci-fi elements that would be pretty alien to the 1940's.

Yes it's a German directed and produced film with German actors. The attention to detail in the film is off the charts. I added trailers in the edit.

I haven't watched it yet myself, but, The Man in the High Castle has a similar basic setup (Axis powers winning World War II), and Amazon has a series based on it.

Though if you just want odd Nazi superweapon stuff and comedy...maybe Iron Sky.

Downfall is good though, and also where the oft-used "Hitler Reacts" video is from.

Despite the perceived cinephilic blasphemy, I enjoyed the remake more.

They're both strikingly similar, and it feels like The Birdcage is more or less a straight remake (no pun intended) but with more things the same than things that were changed, though the vibe is different, due both to the fact that The Birdcage takes place in Miami and takes place less than 20 years after the original (which spawned two sequels).

Also, The Birdcage was the first Robin Williams film I've seen since his passing.
