So yesterday my brother clued me in to the fact that Toho made another Godzilla movie and it was having a limited US release this weekend (subbed). Naturally I had to go see it. The film is a complete reboot; it takes the place of the original Godzilla in continuity and is a repeat of many of the themes and tones of the original movie. It's written by Hidaeki Anno (of NGE fame) and you can definitely see some of the Evangelion influences in the abilities of this incarnation of Godzilla as well as the battle scenes. The movie also includes a number of foreign actors playing the parts of international government officials; they have proper English speakers for US parts and some German speakers for a scene in Europe. The only outlier is a major character who is supposed to be an American government agent of Japanese ancestry but is played by a native Japanese actress with appropriately accented English.
The subs themselves are well done. They make a point of translating the text that comes up in addition to the dialog and even make a few well done "creative" translations to give the cultural background we would lack; the instance that sticks out in my mind is when they make a reference to the Orochi legend and the subs make it seem like the character explained it when I could tell from the dialog that they just referred to the name.

For all the raging aging angry anti-nerdgasm going on against that girl crewed Ghostbusters movie over the summer having now made this the latest movie I've watch I find all the shitty behavior pretty offensive. It does have a few stupid moments with their eye candy idiot receptionist but it's actually a fairly well made movie with some genuine solid not-so-period stupid type jokes that should stand up like in the old duo of movies.
Beyond the credits you see them hanging in the office and one of them on a headset (evp?) hears Zuul mentioning it to the others and then the movie just blips off with them appearing confused. Yup, sequel coming.
I'm sure that's what they want, but given the box office take, probably not going to happen. Was sad to see the movie flop like that. And movie studios will simply take the message to be "female leads don't work". Sad sad sad.

I never looked up the take but hopefully that isn't the case. If it's just one more to let them roll with that Zuul bit to see how it plays out to either let it run more or put the last nail in the coffin would be fine by me. I had been thinking of buying it on amazon but when I saw their best price was the same as the release sale thing Target does I grabbed it and watched it that evening. I think I'd watch it again before the 31st probably with the other 2 as well which I caught a couple weeks back on my blu-ray box set I forgot I had. Also given what is on the shelf may have to fire up Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter too.
I went ahead and did watch Westworld (1973). Had some nice Jurassic Park vibes at times being directed by Michael Crichton himself, but I'd say overall it wasn't bad nor great. Definitely more of a prototype for what's probably a lot better in TV form, so I'll be curious to see how it turns out with the current series.
I remember Westworld. I first heard of that film from the creator commentary on my Simpsons DVDs. One of the show runners (or maybe it was Cohen or Groening) mentioned that the episode "Itchy and Scratchy Land" was based on the movie Westworld.
