Good times, good times.

Gargoyles

This is a made-for-TV film that aired on CBS in 1972. Basically every 600 years, a bunch of demon gargoyles are born to try and overthrow mankind. They apparently do this by having wild spawning parties in the desert and trying to get lucky with some human ladies if need be. Unfortunately this time they managed to show up on the property of some old coot who saw a scientist on TV once, and that old coot manages to talk that scientist into coming down to visit. That's when the gargoyles attack! Pretty soon there are bands of gargoyle hoodlums running around, smashing doors, stealing trucks, and getting into all sorts of shenanigans and hijinks while the local sheriff and a bunch of kids he arrested try to save the scientist's daughter from the horrors of teaching the gargoyle leader how to read. Because reading is the devil!

Yeah, it's obviously low budget. Like occasionally reminds me of Captain Kirk fighting Gorn low budget. Thankfully the gargoyles' one weakness happens to be bullets, so a bunch get shot while somersaulting onto horses...because gargoyles apparently attack via springboard I guess. Still, they rack up a body count, so I can't criticize them too much; they get stuff done, and they look fabulous while doing it. Also, you can see footage from Haxan in the opening credits.

Man, this makes me long for the days of hilarious made-for-broadcast-TV horror movies. Anybody remember Killdozer? Ah, memories...

The other day I saw the remake of Thr Magnificent Seven in theaters.

The action scenes were alright and the humor made everyone in the theater laugh. The emotional scenes were ham-fisted, though. I doubt it'll ever be a classic like the spaghetti westerns that inspired it.

Watched the original Ju-On with a friend yesterday. It was really quite legitimately tense at points, but was a tad confused in its pacing, though the twist at the end was well done, I'll admit. I've never seen the American Grudge, but I've heard the Japanese one is better. The special effects were actually really surprisingly low budget for what I thought would've been equivalent to the US-made one, although I guess I shouldn't've been surprised that the US one had a much larger budget. Turns out, that's the third movie in the series, but that was the first one that wasn't direct to DVD, so it's not so surprising that they didn't have much budget for effects. Still very well acted though. Recommended.

Ju-On and The Grudge are actually quite similar in terms of general plot and the way scares are handled. The Grudge adds white people but takes out some of the additional storyline material, such as the students that get attacked. In the American release, the ghosts also only go after the people who enter the house, as opposed to Ju-On which implies that eventually the ghost goes after everybody.

I find Ju-On has the darker ending but suffers more from pacing problems. The US one basically relies on Ju-On for its scares and doesn't really do anything to improve on the original beyond trimming a little fat, but I don't feel like I needed Sarah Michelle Gellar. Ted Raimi though, yes, he improves everything.
