That's always the issue with sequels. Play it safe and give the fans more of the same, or change up the formula and risk alienating the fans or messing it up. Tough line to walk and you can't please everyone.Ziggy587 wrote:To that I'll argue two points.
1) Wasn't A Link Between Worlds more or less a "paint by numbers sequel" of Link to the Past?
2) If the game was any different than it is, people would be complaining about that instead.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
I'm OK with Yoshi's New Island being a fairly paint by numbers sequel (though it's still doing a lot differently, and not all of it is better). However, I feel like it's an improvement over Yoshi's Island 2.
And, complaining about a "paint by numbers" sequel when it's a sequel to a game that came out 19 years ago, is kind of bullshit.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
I haven't tried it but after Yoshi's Island 2 I'm really really not willing to risk spending money on another bland Yoshi game. The thing is that Yoshi's Island was so original, a game brimful of fresh ideas and Yoshi's Island 2.....added new babies....which didn't play that interesting either. It was a retread of a classic, and not only that, it made Yoshi's Island bland (which I never thought I would say before I tried that game out).
And while the graphic style on the 3DS game doesn't look that good, I'd be willing to give it a chance if the gameplay videos I saw had any interesting mechanics to show (which they didn't). I'd rather spend my money on the new Kirby game which looks to be really good.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
Yoshi's Island DS was too similar to the previous game for sure. All the levels were practically remade, and generally inferior to the previous game.
A Link Between Worlds was a great game, but I personally didn't like that they reused the Hyrule from A Link To The Past. Although the world of the legend of zelda is often similar, there were zero surprises here.
That said, the dungeon designs were good, and felt wholly unique in mechanics to the ones in ALTTP, the upgrading mechanics and the shop to buy equipment was new, and being able to choose the order you tackle things in was interesting. There was enough there to keep things feeling at least a little bit fresh.
Yoshi's Island DS didn't do that. The only differences were the babies, who added almost nothing to the game except slow down an already fairly slow game. I ended up just ignoring them unless they were compulsory to continue.
Yoshi's New Island looks alarmingly similar to YI DS, and it's by the same guys. I think I can wait on it for now.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
I guess that's a fair complaint, but since I haven't beaten LttP yet (I really don't enjoy the dungeon design), I didn't have any complaints. Also the quick travel, save in multiple places (and not having to start at your house or sanctuary) and the many many places to change between light and dark world, made exploring the map much more fun.alienjesus wrote: A Link Between Worlds was a great game, but I personally didn't like that they reused the Hyrule from A Link To The Past. Goooood I looooooooved the dungeons in ALBW. Soooooo good. They did so many different things with the wall mechanic alone. Best Zelda game ever, period.alienjesus wrote: That said, the dungeon designs were good, and felt wholly unique in mechanics to the ones in ALTTP, the upgrading mechanics and the shop to buy equipment was new, and being able to choose the order you tackle things in was interesting. It's by the same studio? Then fuck it, I'm never buying it, unless I find it for 10€ or less.alienjesus wrote: Yoshi's New Island looks alarmingly similar to YI DS, and it's by the same guys. I think I can wait on it for now.

Yoshi's Island DS was made by Artoon. Whereas, Yoshi's New Island was developed by Arzest. The names are similar so I'm sure there was some confusion there.ZeroAX wrote:It's by the same studio?
